More useful data than a dozen handbooks
By The m
Smith's book is excellent for two reasons:
1) His explainations of the properties, structure and applicaiton of various alloys is simple and to the point. (Many of them are somewhat out of date, but so is every other textbook in the world.) Excellent for metallurgists.
2) This book is so loaded with tables, you may never have to look any mechanical property data up in the library again. Excellent for mechanical engineers.
Although expensive, this book will replace a dozen others on your desk.

Women Who Run with the Wolves: Myths and Stories of the Wild Woman Archetype, by Clarissa Pinkola Estes

New enhanced edition of the original underground classic by Clarissa Pinkola EstA(c)s, Ph.D., features rare interview excerpts with this internationally acclaimed Jungian analyst and cantadora (keeper of the old stories). First released three years before the print edition of Women Who Run With the Wolves (Ballantine books, 1997) made publishing history (more than 2 million copies sold worldwide), this landmark audio probes the instinctual nature of women through world myths, folktales, and commentary. Through an exploration into the nature of the wild woman archetype, Dr. EstA(c)s helps listeners discover and reclaim their passion, creativity, and power.

From Publishers Weekly
Folklore, fairy tales and dream symbols are called on to help restore women's neglected intuitive and instinctive abilities in this earthy first book by a Jungian analyst. According to Estes, wolves and women share a psychic bond in their fierceness, grace and devotion to mate and community. This comparison defines the archetype of the Wild Woman, a female in touch with her primitive side and able to rely on gut feelings to make choices. The tales here, from various cultures, are not necessarily about wolves; instead, they illuminate fresh perspectives on relationships, self-image, even addiction. An African tale of twins who baffle a man represents the dual nature of woman; from the Middle East, a story about a threadbare but secretly magic carpet shows society's failure to look beyond appearances. Three brief, ribald stories advocate a playful, open sexuality; other examples suggest ways to deal with anger and jealousy. At times, Estes's commentary--in which she urges readers to draw upon and enjoy their Wild Woman aspects--is hyperbolic, but overall her widely researched study offers usable advice for modern women.

From Kirkus Reviews
A feminist counterpart to Iron John--or, how ``a healthy woman is much like a wolf.'' Est‚s, a Jungian analyst, believes that a woman's wholeness depends on her returning to the sources of her repressed instinctual nature. To illustrate the ways of the ``wild woman,'' the author draws on myths, legends, and fairy tales from a vast and eclectic range of traditions. This collection of stories may well be the most valuable element of the book, which otherwise reads like unedited transcripts of the workshops Est‚s leads to encourage women to return to their ``feral'' roots. Each story demonstrates a particular aspect of woman's experience--relationship, creativity, anger, spirituality, etc. Est‚s finds evidence in the most diverse tales of the necessity for women to reclaim their wildness. The precise nature of this wildness is difficult to fathom, but, at best, it seems to include a genuine capacity to access feelings and to accept one's contradictions, while, at worst, it appears to amount to the kind of self-indulgence that prevailed during the ``me'' generation. Est‚s claims that her book is for every woman, ``whether you be spicy or somber, regal or roughshod''; but her underlying assumption that every woman is free to abandon what holds her back seems ignorant of social and economic realities. The author provides few concrete examples that might help women understand what she expects them to do, and her prose abounds in generalizations and oddities (``the ambitious woman...who is heartfelt toward her accomplishments'') that further undermine her credibility and her considerable scholarship. Hortatory, ecstatic, and, ultimately, irritating. -- Copyright ©1992, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

From the Inside Flap
"WOMEN WHO RUN WITH THE WOLVES isn't just another book. It is a gift of profound insight, wisdom, and love. An oracle from one who knows."
Alice Walker
Within every woman there is a wild and natural creature, a powerful force, filled with good instincts, passionate creativity, and ageless knowing. Her name is Wild Woman, but she is an endangered species. Clarissa Pinkola Estes, Ph.D., Jungian analyst and cantadora storyteller shows how women's vitality can be restored through what she calls "psychic archeological digs" into the ruins of the female unconsious. Using multicultural myths, fairy tales, folk tales, and stories, Dr. Estes helps women reconnect with the healthy, instinctual, visionary attributes of the Wild Woman archetype.
Dr. Estes has created a new lexicon for describing the female psyche. Fertile and life-giving, it is a psychology of women in the truest sense, a knowing of the soul.

Let Your Inner Wild Woman Roar
By Amazon Customer
I would highly recommend this book to any woman who is on the great journey called life. For women who have lost their way, lost track of the creative/ intuitive voice inside. For women who have found their way back to that creative/ intuitive voice inside. Or for any woman who just needs a boost in their life. This book spoke to me so much, especially as a recovered alcoholic. Learning about how my past has played a part in who I am today, how my addiction has played into my life today, and finding my inner La Que Sabe. Wonderful read for women of all ages.

This book is for someone who wants to be awaken.
By Oxana Alexandra
If your true wolf nature is calling you, look into it and listen carefully. It might mean that your soul is asking you to awaken and start taking better care of yourself. I was reluctant to get the book at first because I was struggling with the image of a creature with a ferocious attitude, ravenous desires, and unfulfilled appetites. I couldn't have been father from the truth. Once I started reading the book, I leaned that the creature inside me had a beautiful flip side, which helped me heal my old wounds, love this "child," this "ugly ducking," love myself, all of me. I learned that the wolf in me was creative, family oriented, strong, enduring, and extremely loyal to her mate, to her young, and to her pack. The wolf in me was also a feral woman, although it holds true for a feral man as well, who was born wild, not the "out-of-control" wild, but the one with healthy instincts and intact psyche. Then this woman's spirit was domesticated with a "proper upbringing" and her instincts got injured in the captivity of artificial norms, of false life, while she was still too young, naïve, and trusting to know any better. She became crippled by the excessive control from without, which she then adopted as the control mechanism from within. This mechanism became a cheap substitute, which replaced her natural wiring. She had to find the way back to the original untamed state in order to reclaim her individuality and sovereignty. This book helped me do just that.

From the Inside Flap
In his signature style of grand storytelling, James Michener sweeps us back through time to the Holy Land, thousands of years ago. By exploring the lives and discoveries of modern archaeologists excavating the site of Tell Makor, Michener vividly re-creates life in and around an ancient city during critical periods of its existence, and traces the profound history of the Jews, including that of the early Hebrews and their persecution, the impact of Christianity on the Jewish world, the Crusades, and the Spanish Inquisition. Michener weaves his epic tale of love, strength, and faith until at last he arrives at the founding of Israel and the modern conflict in the Middle East. "The Source is not only a compelling history of the Holy Land and its people but a richly written saga that encompasses the development of Western civilization and the great religious and cultural ideas that have shaped our world.

Amazingly prescient insights wrapped in a schmaltzy, highly improbable tale...
By John P. Jones III
I've read several Michener novels, starting with "Hawaii." I first read "Caravans" some thirty years ago, and since Afghanistan is far from the "back-water" it once was, but has been a major foreign policy concern of the United States, and a focus of our military in a war that will likely exceed the other longest war, Vietnam, I decided to give it a re-read. There is also the personal connection; I once traveled across the country, by local transport, for 11 days in 1971; and my nephew is now with the Marines in Helmund province.

The most stunning aspect of the book is the date it was written: 1963! It is worth saying twice: 1963. At a time when not one American in 500 had heard of the terms "Sunni" and "Shia," and even the few that had may not have been aware of the difference. Yet Michener book is chock full of insights and predictions that came to pass. Consider: (the Afghan, Nazrullah is speaking) "When a thousand men like me have rebuilt Kabul and made it as great as The City once was, either the Russians or the Americans will come with their airplanes and bomb it rubble." Michener was wrong only on the conjunction: instead of "or" it should have been "and." Or consider: "You must not think of Islam as a religion of the desert," Nur warned. "It has much vitality and the world has not yet heard the last of it." Another is: "Don't be afraid of looking stupid, because one of these days we could be driven into war across this terrain, and you'd be the only American who'd ever seen parts of it." And yet one more: (the Afghan leader Shan Khan is speaking) "You Americans seem inordinately preoccupied with the "chaderi" (now normally referred to as the `burka').

The novel is set in 1946, before Pakistan was a nation, and the British still ruled India. Kabul was the ultimate in remote diplomatic postings with virtually no amenities, and Michener depicts a realistic scene of the camaraderie among the expatriates there, which would ring authentic to an expat in Riyadh in the `70's. The storyline involves a young American Embassy official, Mark Miller, driven by the political concerns of a US Senator, to determine the fate of a young American woman, with a Bryn Mawr education, who married an Afghan, and is now "missing." In the process, he crosses the length and width of the country. Along the way, many a topic is tackled, from the developmental efforts of the "enlightened" Afghan elite vis-à-vis the religious conservatives represented by the mullahs; the alienation from upper-class American life of a young women who is seeking the authenticity of the "primitive"; the relationship of a Jew with a German who performed despicable acts on Jews as a Nazi; tackling the question of whether Americans would have been capable of the same barbarities with their own Negro population; how academia serves as a justifying adjunct to the power elites; the desertification of the country due to over irrigation, and how that might equally apply to Denver, CO; and there are also some beautiful descriptions of the Afghan topography. The insight I appreciated the most, and have seen time and time again, was when the American, sure of his knowledge, was showing the native the "correct" way of accomplishing a task, only to be gently remonstrated by the Afghan who pointed out that they had their own way of doing things, and sometimes they might be superior. The case in point was the bridges the Germans had built, that didn't work in the Afghan climate.

So what's not to like? Alas, plenty. With all the above wonderful subjects, the tale itself is highly improbable, with extremely unlikely personal dynamics. For his latter books, Michener hired a team of fact-checkers, and it would have been most beneficial if he had had with this one. I found his closing "Note to the Reader" most useful, because he states when he was in Afghanistan, and where he traveled, and that he witnessed some of the scenes depicted. When Miller and team are going to rescue an American engineer with a broken leg, Michener describes desert crossings with temperatures at 130 F; yet the month is March, with highest temperatures of 90 F. How did Miller learn Pashto, when he must have been in Burma during WW II, flying the "hump" into China? In fact, the principals, like the young American "missing" woman, Ellen Jasper, moved around like there was no WW II going on. It is unlikely the Kochi would have taken the circular route described to reach the Oxus, since there was virtually no vegetation for them to eat along the way. Why not go straight up the Khyber Pass from Jhelum? And there are numerous other problems, but the principal one is the interaction of the characters, and those interactions continue to deteriorate, so that finishing the novel was a relief.

For the subject matter, prescience of his predictions, and the "setting," I'd give Michener the full 5-stars, but the "connective tissue" of the storyline and characters rates a 1-star, so I'll average it out for a 3-star.

A wonderful Michener book and definitely my favourite
By kalad levy
A wonderful Michener book and definitely my favourite, a beast at over 1200 pages of fine print coming in at 500,000 words. It traces a 'tell' in Israel over 12,000 years of history which is a mound where thousands of years of habitation have left layers of history as each civilization has been demolished over time and the new civilization built on top leaving a rising hill.

This similar to a town such as the Old City of Jersulaem which is now about 20 metres higher than its original beginnings thousands of years ago. Jesus didn't walk the streets of the present city, he walked then ten metres or more lower.

The historical fiction written in 1965 is based in the early 1960's during an archaeological dig and traces the various layers of civilizations from caveman to Caanites to Jewish to Christian to Muslim to the present.

It ponders the questions of Israel as a state in the 1960's woven through the individual stories of previous civilizations and their rise and fall. History in a sense repeating itself with the common denominator of change.

Great book--but NOT in Kindle edition.
By L. Whittle
I love this novel, and was very pleased to find it in Kindle as it is a long, bulky book. However, the number of typos and errors is incredible. I found them on almost every page. In the first section, for example, there is a lone describing a bird tucking grass into its nest--somehow the t was replaced with an f. Random punctuation marks appear in the middle of a word--such a abi;ding. I was very disappointed that this great novel didn't receive a decent editing job for the Kindle. If Michener was alive he would be outraged. Pay someone to check for errors before you send the book out on Kindle! Heck, I would do it--I have a BA and MA in English and have taught English, and it really bothers me to see such sloppiness. Respect the author and his words.

"Valery Garrett's research on Chinese dress, especially that worn by the local people, has been a constant inspiration to me as a fashion designer in New York." —Vivienne Tam, fashion designer

From the Inside Flap
"Valery Garrett is one of the few scholars working in the field of Chinese costume studies to consider the very real issues of continuity and evolution of the dress of nearly a fifth of the world's population, thus broadening our understanding of this rich, dynamic history". John E Vollmer, author and scholar.

Valery Garrett's work on the history of Chinese dress will be a significant resource for both scholars and designers." Dr Valerie Steel, Director, Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology, New York.

"Valery Garrett needs no introduction to students of Chinese dress. Her latest publication embodies the fruits of decades of devoted study in all related fields, assiduous collecting and technical know-how." Dr James Hayes, author and historian.

A work of art
By Dr. David Yee
Marvelous in its breadth and scope, Valery Garrett regals the reader with over three hundred years of Chinese dress and its historical context. Evident is the author's passion for the beautiful garments worn in China's last dynasty to the present. This phenomenal book is a welcome addition to scholars and collectors alike and should be required reading for those interested in Chinese art and history.

Chinese textiles
By Dr. John K. Fong
A comprehensive work on Chinese textiles in the last Dynasty of China and the early 20th Century which is profusely illustrated. It is an excellent book for any collector or person interested in this field.
Highly recommended. This book doesn't repeat information which has been previously published but gives a fresh view.

Beautiful book
By Crusader70
Generation gaps are a fact of modern life, but nowhere have they been as wide or frequent as in China, where nearly every decade has seen Chinese society remade to an astonishing extent. One area in which these enormous political and social changes can be traced is in clothing: from dragon robes to cheongsams, Mao suits to Yves Saint Laurent, garments tell the story of China's modern history.

Valery Garrett, the author of eight previous books on the subject and a doyenne of the field, is well placed to trace that fascinating evolution. In Chinese Dress: From the Qing Dynasty to the Present, she has produced her magnum opus.

Qing dress was about rank and control: one could gauge exactly where a subject stood in the imperial, civil, military or social hierarchy by a quick and careful study of robe, hat and accessories (designer handbags not yet having been invented). A massive work of regulations and penalties on the subject was promulgated by the Qianlong Emperor to ensure that Manchu customs were not "subsumed and diluted by Chinese ways." Using the first of more than five hundred gorgeous, mostly colour, illustrations, Chinese Dress explains how to "read" such key exemplars of this system as embroidered "dragon robes" and "mandarin squares." A rich resource for the experienced scholar, these chapters will open the eyes of those new to the intricacies of imperial dress in a way akin to first learning characters.

With much talk of cuffs and vamps and hems, a book so specialized runs the risk of glazing the eyes of the sartorially clueless, but the veteran author wisely spices the narrative with both the Chinese history needed to place the fashions in context and many interesting asides. Thus the perennially fascinating practice of footbinding is explored in every disturbing detail: braided ankle covers, hidden heel supports and puttees just part of the paraphernalia required.

The focus of Chinese Dress, however, and where it breaks new ground, is 20th-century fashion and the dramatic political and social changes that shaped its evolution. This second half of the book draws on the author's explorations in '70 and `80s New Territories Hong Kong, and her interest in the dress and culture of ordinary people; the garments and accessories collected during these efforts now reside at the Victoria & Albert Museum.

A short review can only hint at the contents of Chinese Dress. Wedding, military and peasant attire, hats, shoes, jewelry and accessories are all discussed and illustrated in sumptuous detail. Children's wear, with its focus on "locking the child to the earth" and protecting him (too rarely her) from theft by evil spirits is particularly fascinating: so too the culture's elaborate funerary practices.

Chinese Dress is a beautifully presented and accessible work of scholarship that retells the remarkable story of China's modern transformation from a unique perspective.

I've been looking for years for this book
By rasi2290
I just got this two day ago, and I'm already giddy about it. It addresses what I think is a huge gap in existing resources about product design.

If you're an aspiring inventor or product designer, you've probably wanted to make prototypes of your sketches or ideas.

Most books on product design deal with the conceptual, problem-solving aspect. They tend to gloss over the actual creation of the product, and when they mention prototyping, it's usually the later stages. Here's a summary of every product design case study I've ever read: "The studio created several in-house prototypes. Once they'd worked out most of the dimensions and materials, they made a computer model using CAD, for further refinement."

Yes, we know. We know that's what they did. But HOW did they make those first prototypes, the ones that helped them move on to CAD? What tools and techniques did they use? That's what this book is for.

There's a ton of existing information on CAD software, rapid prototyping, 3D printing, CNC machining, etc. The problem is that none of this will help you get started. It would be incredibly inefficient - and creatively stifling - to make precision-made parts on a computer screen without first having worked out most of your design details physically, by hand. It would be a stab in the dark.

Especially in the earlier stages, you just want to test how things fit, feel, and work together. You want to play with different materials, found objects, shapes you can can quickly cut, carve and glue. Cut a notch here, carve a dent there, make the handle thicker, the base heavier, etc. Evolving your design as you go.

This book explains - in detail, with pictures - the different tools, techniques, and materials you use to do that. It goes over "looks like" and "works like" prototypes. Hand tools, power tools, work flow, workspace, and safety. Adhesives, foam, plastic, wood, metal, and the cutting and shaping of them all. There are a variety of case studies and tutorials, all dealing with different kinds of products, and designed to give you a decent idea of how to use all these tools and materials, or at least get started with more learning on your own. After skimming a few pages, I had already learned what kind of materials I personally needed for one of my projects, and I had some idea of how to work with it. Now I know what tools and materials I need to try exploring and practicing on my own.

This book is, of course, no substitute for hands-on learning. It's an overview, and it packs in quite a bit of information at a very reasonable price. People train for years to learn the techniques outlined here. Also, the book is also very clear that power tools and machines must not be used without supervised training, and so no attempt is made to teach their use in any detail at all. But, having read this book, you will have a much better idea of exactly what skills you need to hone, and the ones you can't hone yourself, you'll at least know what you're looking for.

Great source for inspiration
By Jesse Mcvaney
Although this book does not go really in depth on processes and material selection it does give a good overview of how to go about prototyping. I would recomend this to anyone looking for an introductory book.

good resource
By David Eaton
Models and prototypes simplify communication. This is a good resource for getting started, especially for someone who needs to present ideas, but does not have the design school background.

Passage to Liberty: The Story of Italian Immigration and the Rebirth of America, by Ken Ciongoli, Jay Parini

Passage to Liberty recaptures the drama of the 19th and 20th century immigration to America through photos, letters, and other artifacts -- uniquely replicated in three-dimensional facsimile form. In the tradition of Lest We Forget, Chronicle's bestselling interactive tour through the African American experience, the text uses the stories of individuals and families -- from early explorers, through the wave of 19th century impoverished families, to contemporary figures -- to recapture the rich heritage the Italian people carried with them over the waves, and planted anew in the American soil.

Among the topics covered here are:

  • The roots of American democracy in Roman history
  • The migration of 15 million Italians, 1880-1920
  • Catholicism in Italian-American culture
  • Food, music, and other Italian cultural traditions
  • The Mafia: myth and reality
  • Cultural icons: DiMaggio, Sinatra, Madonna & more

As vibrant and packed full of history as previous volumes in this extraordinary series, Passage to Liberty is a splendid and loving tribute to the Italian-American experience.

From Publishers Weekly
In this slim though surprisingly informative illustrated homage to the Italian-American experience, Ciongoli and Parini (coeditors of Beyond the Godfather) begin their history with the history of America. While the authors mention the great Italian explorers Amerigo Vespucci, Cristoforo Colombo, Giovanni Caboto (John Cabot) and Giovanni da Verrazano they focus on the Italians who, alongside George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, inspired the shaping of America: Cesar Rodney and William Paca were two Italians who signed the Declaration of Independence; Jefferson borrowed a phrase from his friend Filipo Mazzei, an Italian wine merchant and surgeon ("All men are by nature equally free and independent"). Ciongoli and Parini delve into the great wave of Italian immigration that began in the late 19th century, exploring everything from conditions in Italy to the Italian assimilation in the U.S. under such chapters as "Saints of the Immigrants" and "Little Italies." One chapter, "Hostility and Hangings," describes anti-Italian crime in the U.S., while a chapter on the Mafia explains that while "70% of [Americans in 1977] polled associated the word `Italian' with the word `crime,' " only .ooo2% of Italian-Americans have ever been members of organized crime. This handsomely composed book with color illustrations and black-and-white photos also contains pullouts of authentically replicated documents, such as an Italian prayer card, a letter from Jefferson to Mazzei and a letter from Nicola Sacco written to his family nine days before he and Bartolomeo Vanzetti were executed.

Lovely book. Great addition to my collection of books on the Italian immigrant experience.
By Theresa Dluhy
What a beautiful coffee table book! While not the definitive book on the immigrant experience, it did distill the gist of it on each detailed page. Attaching a replica of some significance to the Italian experience on each page was like opening a present every time a page was turned. I looked for each special little treat that made me connect with my immigrant forebears. It was a genius move. Lovely book now sitting on my credenza.

such a beautiful book
By Molly Levine
Not long after my grandmother's death, I went to a Borders store and was looking through the books on sale. I saw this lovely book and picked it up to leaf through it. The first page I opened the book to was the one with the little handwritten recipe. The recipe was unfamiliar to me, but the small neat handwriting was amazingly like my grandmother's, and the slip of paper it was written on was exactly like a page from one of the little notebooks she used to write in. I didn't have to look at another thing in the book to know I had to buy it. When I got the book home and actually read it, I LOVED IT! The book itself is really good, but all of the little bits that are tucked inside really make it worth the money. It's a lovely book.

Something you'll treasure

As you'd expect in a book like this, it tells the tale from Columbus to Madonna, and tells it well, concisely, entertainingly, without being annoyingly fulsome or reverent. What makes this a treaure, though, are all the surprises--you turn a page and find, actually tucked into a corner or attached by glue, replicas of ancient passports, or hand-written recipes, or coupon books from some old immigrant mutual-aid insurance policy. There's even a St. Lucia prayer card from somebody's funeral and the jury's verdict form from a trial of Al Capone. It brings the history to life in a way beyond mere words. If you buy one copy, you'll end up buying more as gifts, without a doubt. It's a beautiful object and a terrific book.

Starting Point, 1979-1996, by Hayao Miyazaki

The first of a pair of memoirs in collection form, featuring essays, interviews, and even a brief comic on the history of airline food, from the master animator.

In the first two decades of his career, filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki laid the groundwork for his legendary movies. Starting Point is a collection of essays, interviews, and memoirs that go back to the roots of Miyazaki's childhood, the formulation of his theories of animation, and the founding of Studio Ghibli.

Before directing such acclaimed films as Spirited Away, Miyazaki was just another salaried animator, but with a vision of his own. Follow him as he takes his first steps on the road to success, experience his frustrations with the manga and animation industries that often suffocate creativity, and realize the importance of bringing the childhood dreams of the world to life. Starting Point: 1979-1996 is not just a chronicle of the life of a man whose own dreams have come true, it is a tribute to the power of the moving image.

A great, complex read
By Amazon Customer
Starting Point: 1979-1996 is an amazing book. It's a heavy read, with essays covering everything from Miyazaki's works, to philosophy and religion, Japanese economy and the life of an animator and so much more. I found it a contradictory, frustrating and often pessimistic read but also to be incredibly fascinating and honest. It adds a whole new dimension to the man we know in Miyazaki. He's a genius as an animator but it seems he must be a terribly unfulfilled person in real life (he missed much of his children's lives due to his workaholic attitude). The book could do with some more pictures and maybe more information on his Nausicaa manga but otherwise it's a brilliant, if not always a happy read. I hope Viz Media release the sequel - Turning Point: 1997-2008, sometime in the near future. Highly recommended for Miyazaki fans. 5/5

A Must-Read For All Miyazaki Fans
By Johanna
I bought Starting Point at the beginning of this year as material for a research paper I was writing on three of Hayao Miyazaki's films. Since then, I have read the entire thing and reread multiple portions of this extraordinary book. It became an invaluable resource for me as I wrote my paper, but it was also a very enjoyable and personal book. Over the course of the weeks it took me to finish it, I felt like I actually got to know Hayao Miyazaki. As I told several people, Starting Point is definitely the best book I have purchased in a very long time, and so far it is the best thing I have read this year. With all the wonderful essays, interviews, directorial memos, and even drawings it contains, I'm surprised there hasn't been more hype about it. It is an absolute must-read for any Miyazaki fan. I can't believe we had to wait more than fifteen years for this book to be translated and published in the United States (it was first published in Japan in 1996).

The book, which is nearly 500 pages long, has been divided into several parts and includes a foreword by John Lasseter (director of Toy Story) and an afterword by Isao Takahata (director of Grave of the Fireflies). The first part, entitled "On Creating Animation" is perhaps the most technical part of the book. Even though many of Miyazaki's thoughts on animation and film techniques were a bit over my head, I still enjoyed reading those chapters and thinking about them. Miyazaki's writing style is simple enough that I didn't feel swept away by too much jargon or overly-technical terms. For filmmakers and those interested in how animation works, this part of the book will be fascinating. The second part, called "On The Periphery of the Work" was similar to the previous section in that it contained chapters about animation techniques. However, Miyazaki mainly writes about his thoughts on various animated films. He also includes some very short essays like "The Tokyo I Love" that almost feel like journal entries. Part three, "People", is full of essays about individuals who have helped, inspired, and even irritated Miyazaki. Two of my favorites are "I Left Raising Our Children To My Wife" and "My Old Man's Back." These are both very vulnerable essays about some of the people closest to Miyazaki, and reading them almost brought tears to my eyes.

"A Story in Color" and part of "My Favorite Things" give the reader a short break from the text with a comic and some illustrations. "Dining in Midair" is a charming and sometimes amusing comic about the history of in-flight dining. Scrapbooks No. 1 - 3 in the beginning of "My Favorite Things" display some pictures of flying machines, tanks, and cars, and also a very short illustrated story called "I Want A Garden Like This." Then we are back to more essays for the remaining part of "Favorite Things." My favorite essay in this section is "My Random Thoughts Notebook Is My Hobby." This one made me laugh because I expected it to be an essay about Miyazaki's random thoughts notebook. However, it was simply a piece full of disjointed thoughts, memories, and observations.

"Planning Notes; Directorial Memoranda" was a nice inclusion and the directorial memos were fun to read. For those who want more details about some of their favorite Miyazaki films like Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service, Porco Rosso, and Princess Mononoke, this section is for them. Although the memos are fairly short, I found them fascinating and enjoyable. However, for those who really want depth and insight into their favorite films, "Works" is the part to flip to. This section has a lot of information on Miyazaki's earlier works, like Lupin III, Future Boy Conan, and Panda! Go Panda! I had not heard of any of these before reading the book, but reading the chapter on Lupin was what convinced me to watch the film Lupin III: Castle of Cagliostro, which was excellent. "Works" also has quite a few extensive chapters on Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, My Neighbor Totoro, and Castle in the Sky. Miyazaki focuses on Nausicaä especially in several chapters, one of my favorites being an interview titled "Nature Is Both Generous and Ferocious."

All in all, this book was excellent and I am very pleased to have it in my library. I have heard rumors that Viz Media might be publishing Miyazaki's later book Turning Point: 1997 - 2008 soon, and I hope that is the case. Much as I enjoyed this book, I would love to read more about Miyazaki's later works like Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, and Ponyo. In the meantime, I plan to read this book over and over again, and I encourage anyone interested in Miyazaki's works (or even just interested in film and animation) to pick up a copy.

The vision of a genius
By klo_dude
Hayao Miyazaki is considered one of the best directors of animation history.
That easily is the best reason of why to buy this book. Covering the sursprisingly amount of 500 pages, Starting Point (in a beatiful edition by Viz Media) icludes not only all the essays and commentaries written by Miyazaki between 1979 and 1996, but also integrates a lot of skecthes, cartoons and rare drawings of the famous director. Not only that, but the biggest catch of the book is discovering that Miyazaki, as what it is (a genius), it's also a complex individual and a likeable writer. His opinions included in this book, cover a wide variety of topics: the history of Japan, animation principles, evolution of the anime industry, his personal life, opinions of society, ecology, war and even life.

Starting Point is a provoking and complex read. The opinions of Miyazaki may come as overly extreme or controversial, but in his broad vision of the world is clear that he makes his animated movies with passion and care for the children (which are his intended audience). Viz Media deserves a price for this hardcover edition, the design and quality is top-notch and includes a brief, but insightful introduction by John Lasseter and an Afterword, by the also amazing director, Isao Takahata -from Grave of the Fireflies fame-.

A recommended read by fans of anime, animation or Studio Ghibli and a must-buy by animation students.
