Book Description

THE COUSINS' WAR
Book One

Philippa Gregory, "the queen of royal fiction,"*
presents the first of a new series set amid the
deadly feuds of England known as the
Wars of the Roses.

Brother turns on brother to win the ultimate prize, the throne of England, in this dazzling account of the wars of the Plantagenets. They are the claimants and kings who ruled England before the Tudors, and now Philippa Gregory brings them to life through the dramatic and intimate stories of the secret players: the indomitable women, starting with Elizabeth Woodville, the White Queen.

The White Queen tells the story of a woman of extraordinary beauty and ambition who, catching the eye of the newly crowned boy king, marries him in secret and ascends to royalty. While Elizabeth rises to the demands of her exalted position and fights for the success of her family, her two sons become central figures in a mystery that has confounded historians for centuries: the missing princes in the Tower of London whose fate is still unknown. From her uniquely qualified perspective, Philippa Gregory explores this most famous unsolved mystery of English history, informed by impeccable research and framed by her inimitable storytelling skills.

Ms. Gregory is Back!
By Julie Peterson
I have been anxiously awaiting the new Philippa Gregory book THE WHITE QUEEN. Like many, I enjoyed THE OTHER BOLEYN GIRL; however, I didn't exactly love the last book that I read by Ms. Gregory. I was sincerely hoping that THE WHITE QUEEN would love up to all its advance billing. After reading it (or you could say devouring it), I am so excited to say that Ms. Gregory is back. I loved THE WHITE QUEEN!

THE WHITE QUEEN is the first book in The Cousins' War Series. You can't see me, but I'm doing a little happy dance because that means there will be two more books about the Plantagenets -- THE RED QUEEN and THE WHITE PRINCESS. I am already excited about the release of the next book because I felt as if I was kind of left hanging at the end of THE WHITE QUEEN. I don't mean that in a negative way and I'm sure it was the author's intent, but I want to know what happens next!

While I definitely enjoy historical fiction, I am sadly lacking in knowledge about England and its Monarchy. As a result, I knew almost nothing about the Plantagenets except for a few small things that appeared as side stories in other novels. I can't tell you how much of this story is fact versus fiction; and frankly, I don't even care. I was fascinated by the story Ms. Gregory told about these characters' lives. THE WHITE QUEEN is better than any televised drama or movie I've ever seen. These characters are smart, determined, and ruthless; and I just loved reading about them.

I thought THE WHITE QUEEN had a little bit of everything; and I'm sure there is something in Elizabeth Woodville' s story that will capture your attention. First, THE WHITE QUEEN is just a fabulous historical story about the Cousins' War. There are so many scenes where brother is pitted against brother for control; and the characters involved have absolutely no idea who they can and can not trust. It was a great, suspenseful ride for the reader too! I also thoroughly enjoyed how Ms. Gregory used facts to tell the story while also embellishing the mysteries and holes in the characters' lives to make a very readable story. I realize that Ms. Gregory picked some fascinating people to write about, but a whole lot of credit goes to her for being such an amazing storyteller.

Another part of this story that will keep many readers entertained is the magical and sorcery elements. Elizabeth is said to be the descendant of a mythical water creature called Melusina. Ms. Gregory incorporated the myth of Melusina into the novel and actually used it as a recurring theme/symbol throughout the story. In addition, Elizabeth's mother practiced some examples witchcraft. Some people actually claimed that Elizabeth's mother put a spell on Edward to make him fall in love with her daughter. The character of Elizabeth also had premonitions about certain things and places in her life. She always had a bad feeling that something awful would occur in the Black Tower.

One of my favorite elements of the THE WHITE QUEEN was the love story angle. It seemed to me as if there was a perfect blend of romance and history in this book. Not only did THE WHITE QUEEN show the love affair between Elizabeth and Edward, but this book is also demonstrated the love between mothers and their children. More than once, I was amazed by what women did to protect their children especially in the case of Elizabeth and her sons.

THE WHITE QUEEN would make an excellent book club pick. In fact, if your group enjoys historical fiction like mine does, then you should definitely consider this book in the very near future. One added bonus is that the book is around 400 pages (shorter than many historical novels), and it is not at all overwhelming in scope. There is a great reading guide with fifteen questions that really allow you to delve into Elizabeth's life and her actions. Some of the topics for discussion include mother/daughter relationships, moral dilemmas, adultery, betrayal, and witchcraft. There is also a very interesting interview with Ms. Gregory that gives you some insight into the background of this novel.

Average
By Ellis Bell
The White Queen opens in 1464, on the day that Elizabeth Woodville meets Edward IV, the man who has just recently been crowned King of England. In the attempt to gain back the lands she lost when her husband died, Elizabeth catches the eye of the young king, and becomes Queen of England herself--and eventually, the mother of kings and queens of England.

I have mixed feelings about this book.

Here's what I didn't like so much:
--The fact that the book is written in the present tense. Gregory started writing this way sometime around The Boleyn Inheritance, and it gets on my nerves sometimes because I feel that using the present tense for historical fiction is so limiting.
--The water imagery got to be a bit much-too-much at times. It was beautiful at first, but the fact that Elizabeth kept talking about her ancestress, the water goddess/nymph Melusina, began to get tired after a while.
--Although Gregory is great in general at describing the events of the time periods of which she writes, she's not so good as describing how people actually lived--as with her previous novels, there's very little about what her characters wear, eat, or do in their free time. It's the little bits and pieces that make characters come to life, make them three-dimensional.
--Reading Sharon Kay Penman has seemingly made me pro-Richard III for life, so I was a little disappointed by Gregory's vilification of him in the book (though of course, when the story is told from the point of view of Elizabeth Woodville, of course Richard would be portrayed in a negative light).
--About halfway through the book, Gregory switches from 1st person POV to 3rd, in order to talk about some of the decisive battles of the Wars. I can understand her intent, but it was jarring to me to go back and forth.

However, I think The White Queen is a vast improvement over Gregory's previous book, The Other Queen. Elizabeth is much more of a three-dimensional character, as are the other people that populate the novel. I was also a lot more engaged by the story--mostly because the story of the War of the Roses is more interesting than that of Mary, Queen of Scot's captivity! Elizabeth generally has a bad rep, but here she comes across as a sympathetic woman, strong and courageous at a time when the times moved against her. Gregory uses her imagination a lot more in this novel, because there's so much less documentation to work from. I think it's a good thing that Gregory has moved away from writing about the Tudors (at least for the time being); the Plantagenets are a breath of breath air on Gregory's writing, which was in the process of getting stale.

I Wanted So Much to Like This
By Tamara T. Pitts
I enjoyed the Tudor series. However, it did seem that each book following "The Other Boleyn Girl" was progressively worse, ending with the travesty that was "The Other Queen." I so wanted to like this book.

First off - it is very confusing. I know a lot of English history, but was constantly confused. If you knew nothing about English history, I think you'd be totally flummoxed. The map and family tree at the front of the book were not helpful at all.

Second, the writing was AWFUL. I've read some of the stories my 13 year old writes and she is a Pulitzer Prize winning author compared to most of the conversations between the characters in this book. The dialog is repetitious to the point of beyond nauseating. It goes a little something like this, and I am NOT exagerrating:

"Darling, is your meat exceptionaly chewy?" I paused and chewed my meat for a moment. "Yes, dear," I replied, "the meat is very chewy. Very chewy indeed. In fact, I agree that it is exceptionally chewy." Edward looked at me for a moment while chewing and chewing his meat. "Darling, I think that I have never encountered anything like the chewiness of this chewy meat since that particularly chewy rack of lamb I had back in 1465." I returned Edward's amourous look while I continued to chew and chew and chew my particularly and extraordinarily chewy meat. "Yes, dear, that chewy rack of lamb back in 1465 was exceptionally chewy. In fact, that was a very strong year for exceptionally chewy meat. But this is nowhere near as chewy as the chewiful chewiness of the particularly chewy brisket we had a Blackfriars in 1469." "Really?" Edward paused while working and chewing a particularly chewy piece of meat in his mouth. "Well, you may have a point, but the chewiness of this chewy meat is so chewy that I don't think I can chew it any more."

If they really talked like that back in the 1400s, no wonder that they all wanted to kill each other. Remove all of the repetitive words and sentences from this book and it would be 60-70 pages shorter. Who do you blame - the writer that writes something like this or the editor who fails to fix it?

Do yourself a favor. DON'T BUY THIS BOOK. I wouldn't even recommend that you check it out of the library.

Praise for Robyn Chachula's previous title, "Baby Blueprint Crochet"
Flamie Award Winner 2011 for best designer, children.
Nominated as Best Book of 2010 by Crochet Liberation Front.
"I hope you'll take a look at "Baby Blueprint Crochet" and that you'll enjoy it as much as I do. For you new crocheters, Robyn is a genius and experienced teacher. She is known for breaking down instructions clearly and for visual crochet, which is the use of charts. Robyn's instructional section in the book is like none-other. I will use it for a reference from here on out. For experienced crocheters, you will love the ease and sophistication of these projects." - "Spudandchloe.com/blog"
"As with her other books, Chachula pays special attention to detail in her patterns and finishing. There's plenty of help in this book to get you through each project. Beginners and more experienced crocheters will benefit equally from the details Chachula includes." - "CraftGossip.com"
"Robyn is innovative in her construction and designs, while still down to earth and realistic about what little kids will wear. This book is a must-have." - "PetitePurls.com"

Traditional without being the same old thing
By Rudy Fan
This is a different type of crochet book still with some of the traditional designs, but with some added zing. These designs are all done with attention to detail. These are not just thrown together and are not boring. They are truly artistic works done by top designers. Here are the main contents of the items in the book:

CABLES
Tuxedo Pillow + Cable Tips
Eloise Baby
Artesia Zigzag
Croises Cable
Vika
Veledilo Cable

GRANNY MOTIFS
Hatsukoi Pillow + Granny Motif Tips
Dots + Poppies Baby
Peacock
Mod Retro
Cabine de Dentelle
Kaleidoscope

COLOR
Elan Waves Pillow + Color Tips
Peerie Baby
Behrens Color Block
Desert Sunrise
Moroccan Circles
Bethlehem Star

LACE
Vigne Pillow + Lace Tips
Amada Baby
Sunken Treasure
Damask Lace
Exploded Pineapple

TUNISIAN
Nauha Pillow + Tunisian Tips
Smocked Elegance Baby
Mission Cabled
Aryanah Sampler
Van Gogh Waves
Starburst Entrelac

Even the names are works of art! And as you can see, each section has specific tips concerning that particular type of crochet work. Each chapter has a mini-workshop to help the crocheter succeed with each pattern.

The mixing of lace and single crochet struck me as quite different in Cabine de Dentelle. This would be best used as a decorative piece, not for warmth. One piece I particularly like is Van Gogh Waves; it is just gorgeous and lush looking. I love the colors and the wave design does indeed remind me of Van Gogh's art. Also, I usually don't like cables in crochet, but these are better looking than most and used to full advantage in these afghans.

The yarn requirements are clearly stated. They use some sweet yarn, but substitutions would be easy to do. The rest of the pattern is very readable in a good font and each special stitch is explained in detail. All skill levels can use this book, but I would say it's more for intermediate crocheters, rather than for beginners.

This book isn't perfect, but then again sometimes all those 'out there' type crochet books really aren't for the usual person looking for some unusual designs. They can sometimes look a bit too artsy to be practical. I think this book balances the two approaches and I can recommend it to anyone looking for a slightly different approach to the usual afghans.

Designs Are More "Traditional" Than "Unexpected"
By Lynne E.
In compiling this collection of traditional but thoroughly modern afghans, crochet designer Robin Chachula asked other well-known designers "to use the afghan as a vehicle to showcase their favorite aspect of crochet." The designers responded with afghans using crochet cables, colorwork, lace, granny motifs, and Tunisian crochet.

In purchasing this book, I was hoping for more of the "unexpected". Thus I was somewhat disappointed by the "traditional" look of most of the afghan designs. Two of the most intriguing designs are Vika (Celtic cables and knots) and Bethlehem Star (inspired by the Bethlehem Star quilt pattern). However, Vika's central Celtic knot is accomplished with applied I-cord, and Bethlehem Star's motifs are made from small, individually-crocheted pieces (the rays of the stars) that must be sewn together. Thus I can't see myself making either afghan, although both are quite pretty.

However, you can't go wrong with a pattern collection published by Interweave Press! The crochet instructions are given in both written-out and charted form, and the full-color photographs of the afghans (including closeups showing important details) are beautiful. The individual patterns include quotations from the designers, plus tips for making the particular afghan look its best. For example, the Vika tip explains how to avoid catching your stitches on other stitches when you're working post stitches behind stitches already worked; the Cabine de Dentelle tip explains the importance of blocking the squares by carefully ironing them.

Many of the designers have contributed short motivational "Beginner Tips" in the book's introduction. The cable designs are by Robyn Chachula, Marty Miller, Drew Emborsky, Annie Modesitt, Jill Wright, and Simona Merchant-Dest. The granny motif designs are by Robyn Chachula, Linda Permann, Ellen Gormley, Edie Eckman, Annette Petavy, and Tammy Hildebrand. The colorwork designs are by Robyn Chachula, Kathryn Merrick, Leigh Radford, Carol Ventura, Kimberly McAlindin, and Mary Beth Temple. The lace designs are by Robyn Chachula, Tracie Barrett, Kristin Ohmdahl, Marly Bird, and Doris Chan. The Tunisian crochet designs are by Robyn Chachula, Darla Fanton, Diane Halpern, Dora Ohrenstein, Kim Guzman, and Megan Granholm.

Not for the beginner
By M. Poller
I agree with both of the other reviewers that this is quite a special afghan book and will be appreciated by the advanced crocheter looking for something unusual. The first section of cables is for me the most difficult one. I like the Tunisian crochet and the lace and granny sections. The afghans I'd most like to make are the Tunisian crochet sampler by Ohrenstein, Van Gogh waves by Guzman and Starburst entrelac afghan by Granholm. This book doesn't have a lot of information on doing the cable stitches. with all of the regular type afghan books it's good to have one that is definitely original by lots of well known designers working today.

This book has been on my tbr list for months and I finally broke down. This book is beautifully written, well structured, and well developed.
Talon is a marine veteran with secrets and damage going back to way before his time in Iraq. His sister Marj and his brothers are determined to get him help, but his help came in the form of Marj's best friend Jade.

Without giving too much away, simply put this book is a must read and I am truly looking forward to book 2! It ends with a huge cliffhanger!

JUST DON'T!!
By Amazon Customer
I can not believe this series received so many five star rating! Who ever compared this to Fifty Shades obviously never read that book or series. Do yourself a favor and DON'T get sucked in.

With all of the great ratings, I bought Craving. The Steel Brothers Saga, I thought three brothers, three books. OH NO!! Three books for ONE story, and I HATE HATE HATE books that end in cliffhangers,
but I continued thru all three to finish a book I started, THEN book 3 ends leaving you hanging!!

NO WAY will I buy 9 books at this price to get one complete story.

“Given the frequency of weasel words in all forms of media, copies of this reasonably priced volume for the reference desk and the reference shelves would be a good investment.”

“From ‘abdominal protector’ to ‘zippies,’ this little dictionary is a delightful take on modern American culture . . . With a sharp political eye and ample wit, Wasserman and Hausrath zero in on the misnomers, euphemisms, evasions and simple flim-flam that litter contemporary political an professional discourse.”

“Paying homage to George Orwell’s doublethink and newspeak, Wasserman
(emeritus, information sciences, U. of Maryland) and Haurath (retired,
Senior Foreign Service) decipher terms—such as abdominal protector, axis
of evil, and zippies—that are misleading, euphemistic, misnomers, politically
correct, or trendy. Weasel word is not defined, but one readily gets
the idea. Indexing is by terms in areas from business to science and technology.”

"In ‘Weasel Words: The Dictionary of American Doublespeak,’ University of Maryland professors Paul Wasserman and Don Hausrath shine the spotlight on language that obscures rather than illuminates."

"An entertaining guide to the culture and politics of the day."

"For those who are tired of incomprehensibility, there is a new handy reference book: ‘Weasel Words: The Dictionary of American Doublespeak’ by Paul Wasserman and Don Hausrath. This book, if used properly, should make you think twice before saying ‘pre-owned,’ instead of ‘used,’ or speaking of people who have a ‘credibility gap,’ instead of calling them liars."

"There is a new book out titled ‘Weasel Words.’ It is an attempt to deconstruct ‘doublespeak.’ The authors, Paul Wasserman and Don Hausrath explain the distortions and marketplace flim-flam that inundates our language."

"Decoding doublespeak...George Orwell coined the term ‘doublethink,’ which means the ability to believe contradictory ideas simultaneously. ‘Doublespeak,’ as authors Paul Wasserman and Don Hausrath explain in their new book, ‘Weasel Words: The Dictionary of American Doublespeak,’ connotes ‘distortions and obfuscations and marketplace flim-flam.’ These two men, who've both taught at the University of Maryland, give Orwell his due. From the hundreds of words and phrases so expertly redacted by Wasserman and Hausrath, here's a partial list in three arbitrary areas: computers, work and war."

"One of the most disturbing recent words, says Wasserman, is "extraordinary rendition," which the authors define as 'The Bush II Administration's name for outsourcing of torture by using U.S. agents to take alleged terrorists to countries outside the footprint of U.S. legislation.' Using slogans and broad abstractions to cloak reality isn't a recent government ploy, but Wasserman says it happens more frequently now. 'Part of the problem is that it has become so commonplace and (the population) has become immune to it. We take the terms that have no meaning or very little meaning and accept them instead of asking for the truth.'"

"Most of its entries are...slogans and buzzwords. But the book does list some whopping examples of jargon, from ‘approved interrogation techniques’ (which means ‘legal torture,’ the authors say) to ‘zone of proximal development (ZPD),’ a category covering what a child cannot do without adult guidance – ‘such as riding a bicycle,’ the authors say, ‘or wearing sensible clothes.’"

"It skewers politicians and journalists, military leaders and academics, for filling - or as the dictionary might have it, ‘cross-pollinating’ - their speech with phrases that mean nothing....One thing is for sure: anyone who reads 'Weasel Words' will find himself well-equipped to avoid clichés like the plague."

Not worth the trouble of reading
By Majik
What I was expecting was a list of double speak terms and their definitions.

What I got was a list of words with a bunch of biased opinions and allegations toward certain groups of people who may be in some way associated with those words.

This book is not only politically offensive it's also outdated and in many places plain wrong.

The definitions provided show a lack of research and a great deal of assumption.

The book is a mish-mash of thrown together words, many of which are not even double speak. Many of the words are netisms and acronyms. Its lack of organization makes finding a particular word difficult.

I was expecting words used in car commercials and medication adverts to be defined (words like "customer cash" and "APR" that are real doublespeak words), but they were not.

This self-purported "dictionary" is nothing doing.

Very Weak
By amazon fan
This book is useless.Perhaps when it was written it was relevant.
The doublespeak vocabulary has exponentially been expanded since it's writing.
