About the Author

Jeff Webb is one of the original Visual Basic team members. He was intensely involved with Excel VBA and conceived the first Office Developer's Kit. Jeff also wrote the first book on Excel VBA, Using Excel Visual Basic for Applications, which has remained in print for an amazing 12 years. Now, he returns to his favorite subject with a completely new, comprehensive guide: Programming Excel with VBA and VB .NET.

Steve Saunders is a Microsoft veteren who helped pioneer the design of hypertext help systems that paved the way for the design of today's Web sites. He was lead designer for the award-winning Microsoft Access and Basic help systems, and was a charter member of the Visual Basic product team. Later, Steve wrote documentation for Access programmers and became an Access programmer himself, creating applications for his group at Microsoft and for a growing list of clients outside the company.

Businesses and non-profit organizations use Steve's affordable custom applications to track their critical information, including customers and orders, lodging reservations, real estate listings, donors and donations. Since 1996, the Methow Valley Sport Trails Association (MVSTA) has used his race management application, Racetracker, to produce accurate and timely results for its popular cross-country ski and running races.

Before his years at Microsoft, Steve was a reporter and editor for newspapers in Utah, Maine, and Massachusetts, and a technical writer in the database group at Digital Equipment Corp. He holds a master's degree in journalism from Boston University, a graduate certificate in technical writing from Northeastern University, and a bachelor's degree in technical writing and creative writing from Carnegie-Mellon University.

Great reference book

"Programming Excel with VBA & .NET" is certainly a very 'weighty' tome. At around 1100 pages you certainly get a lot of paper for your money! However, do you get value for your money? I have yet to read a book on this topic which is more comprehensive in its coverage in terms of the description of the Object Model and the properties and methods, in many cases complete with useful examples. So in that regard it is an excellent reference. The benefit of the author being part of the Microsoft OLE Automation team when VB was added to Excel is very clear. The book also covers VBA itself in good depth. However, I feel that much of this could have been usefully relegated to a reference Appendix. If you are buying this book to learn VBA as such then there are many other excellent choices. The value in this book is in the application of VBA to Excel. You should not consider this book unless you are already very comfortable with VBA. If you are only just learning VBA but try to go on to read the rest of the book, you might find it hard going.

I have read other books that devote more space to and explain better the use of Ranges in VBA code; "pictures are worth a thousand words". If you cannot assimilate this aspect of VBA programming with Excel then you will struggle. Because of the recursive nature of Range references in Excel it can be a difficult concept to understand. I know personally that when I got the hang of that and how to use relative referencing with the R1C1 notation and to use the Cell object my productivity went up tremendously, and my frustration level dropped accordingly. Excel is probably the most difficult and complex application of the Office products when it comes to the Object Model and accordingly programming in VBA. On balance I would have no hesitation in recommending this book as part of your Excel VBA programming arsenal. Typically no one book can give you all of the insight that you need. Accordingly I feel comfortable in giving it 5 stars.

Great book, but where's the .NET?

This is a fantastic book for learning VBA programming in Excel. The first 70 pages are devoted to programming basics (variables, conditional statements, objects, modules and procedures, etc.) Most of the rest of the book is devoted to glorious Excel tasks and objects. Really, this is quality material.

A mere 30 pages is devoted to .NET. Most of this is simply how to fire up Visual Studio and create a project. Worthless, really. I'm betting that the publisher made the decision to add ".NET" to the title since that was a sexy buzzword back in '03. I'm subtracting a single star for this little piece of marketing deception. In summary, this book is terrific for learning Excel VBA (and general programming principles), but is no good for learning how to marry Excel to .NET.

Comprehensive and Authoritative

When you attempt to get into a new area of coding, it is best to have an authoritative reference. Confidence in your source really helps in getting through the inevitable rough spots. "Excel with VBA & .NET" seems to fill the bill. It certainly does not hurt to know that the author was on the Microsoft OLE Automation team when VB was added to Excel.

The "comprehensive" half of my review title comes with the packed 1100 pages. All the programming basics, all the programmable objects, all the usable features are covered. In addition, the book covers extending Excel with add-ins and dealing with security.

My own interest in programming Excel objects is related to my job as a GUI interface developer for browser-based applications. As more information and functionality goes to the Web, the convenience of taking HTML data displays and exporting them to Excel is finding an expanding and demanding market. I was somewhat disappointed that the book did not approach more topics from the perspective of this modern trend.

A friend preparing to teach Excel VBA next fall grabbed the book from my desk and had a look. She was certain "Excel with VBA & .NET" would be an excellent platform and reference for that class. That high recommendation certainly trumps my quibble about not having more material on browser implementations.

Systems Engineering - A Good Introduction

Good introductory book on Systems Engineering, covering most important subjects (Introduction to Sys. Eng., Conceptual, Preliminary and Detailed Design and Development, and a nice chapter on Engineering Management).

In some figures it presents a process for engineering a system, along with explanation and examples. I enjoyed A LOT this approach.

Presents information on standards (MIL-STD-499B, IEEE-1220, EIA-632) and a brief overview of SEI's Capability Maturity Model for Systems Engineering (CMM-SE).

What I liked is that it is "straight to the point" and an easy to read book.

Downside: it has no exercises at the end of each chapter.

I recommend it for both students and practitioners.

Excellent technical reference

This is a truly unique book. It brings a strong technical and industrial perspective to an ancient practice: composting organic waste. Filled with practical examples of large-scale composting systems from municipalities and industrial facilities, Haug provides a wealth of information for anyone seeking to implement composting on an large scale.

One of the things I really appreciate about Haug's style and presentation is how he does not take basic theoretical matters for granted. For example, he spends an entire chapter (3) on the fundamentals of thermodynamics, including one of the clearest explanations of the Second Law of Thermodynamics I've ever read. As a teacher, I am a firm believer in the value of review: even for those who know these basic principles well, there is merit in explaining them over especially when placed in a context (in this case, aerobic decomposition of organic matter) that is different from what one might encounter in a typical basic chemistry text.

From Strength to strength

The MacLeod and The MacKay have been enemies since anyone can remember

Anna MacKay is annoyed with her brother Eoin, Laird MacKay and in a temper decides to go for a walk.

Whilst on her walk she doesn't realise how far she's gone when she stumbles on a young boy who has had an accident and helps him not realising that she's on MacLeod land.

Andrew MacLeod and his men come upon a woman wearing MacKay colours holding his son, he thinks she is trying to kidnap him and so takes her to his fathers keep, whilst there she becomes ill and the full story of what really happened emerges.

Anna wants to go home, Laird MacKay and Andrew wants her to stay, will she, won't she, why does the Laird want to keep her?

To find the answers, get this riveting and exciting book, it's got Cecil Giltenan's unwavering talent for writing and her books keep going from strength to strength.

Loved it!

I just finished reading this book. It was a wonderful story, and I enjoyed it very much. It kept me interested enough to sit and read it in one sitting. There was no skimming over boring parts like some books that I've read. The dialog had me laughing out loud several times causing me to stop and realize how much I enjoy this author's writing style.

Having read several of her other books I was anxiously awaiting this one. It did not disappoint. I will continue looking for more books from this author. Thank you Ms. Giltenan for this great book.

Best of the series

I read this through KU. I think this book felt the most well-written if the three. The style of the author's writing makes the reader feel a full range of emotion alongside the main girl as she discovers that no good deed goes unpunished. I liked seeing the different ways in which the main girl attempts to deal with the many things that were beyond her control. This book makes me appreciate being born in modern times, lol. I really liked it. The best part was no insta-love (at least not overtly); affection grew from time spent together. Loved it.

Decent history of black leather jackets

If you want a pretty thorough history of the black leather jacket, this is a pretty good read. It has a definite British slant to it, but still acknowledges American contributions like Marlon Brando, James Dean, Harleys, etc. If you want something on other types of leather wear, sorry, you won't find it here. I was hoping there would be coverage of horsehide bomber jackets, i.e., A-2 World War II vintage, but there is scant mention of the subject. You'll have to look elsewhere if that's your interest. There are good black and white photos of various leather gear and subculture types from 50's bikers to new age rockers. A worthwhile purchase in my opinion.

Great book by Tanaka, who runs the great "Inspiration" vintage shows. If you're into vintage look for his other books too.

When Powers wrote this he was still in apology mode. I certainly don't think he had anything to be sorry about. He got shot out of the sky by a Russian missile and did hard time in a Soviet max joint. Would anyone of us handled it better than he did. Here is the big issue he doesn't really confront. Lee Harvey Oswald knew the exact altitude of the U2 flights and the CIA knew Oswald had defected to Russia in 1959. Yet in 1960 the agency decided to send Powers on a full border to border overflight. The first one ever! Either they knew Oswald was on our side the whole time or ...... they wanted to make sure Powers got shot down. Which was it.

With respect to the "Cold War" we usually know the official versions from both the government of the USA and of the USSR. Powers book is extremely interesting because it gives you a private account of somebody that was deeply involved in the U-2 Cold War incident: a third point of view. A point of view that has no "agenda" to push through.
Powers description of his life in prison had for me an almost spiritual meaning. After reading what he went through, I felt grateful for what I have. He mentions, for example, that in prison work is cherished: he and his cell mate fought to have the privilege of cleaning their cell.
On the other hand, his actual experience in jail was very different from what you see in the movies. There was no violence, no torture, no conspiracy to escape. In almost two years he had a chance to speak with only one other prisoner: his cell mate. It was the most boring experience imaginable, so much so that some prisoners lost their minds.
It is difficult not to feel contempt for Dwight Eisenhower who after ordering the flight completely abandoned Powers to his fate. Eisenhower cared much more for his "prestige" than for any person but in the end his prestige went down the drain anyway when his involvement in the U-2 affair was finally known.
Another player that has dramatically dropped in stature for me is Robert Kennedy. His callousness is hard to believe. After all the suffering Powers went through in the USSR for doing his duty for the CIA, R. Kennedy was willing to try him for treason with the only purpose of advancing his political career! The politics surrounding this event are sickening: JFK had invited Powers to meet him at the White House but at the last moment the offer was withdrawn.
In the end, no president or high level politician did anything to obtain Powers'release from the USSR. It was his father whom he had to thank for his release.
Obviously, the CIA did not want this book to be published and 8 years had to pass before it finally saw the light.
I fully recommend the book as it gives you an insight as to how history is really made by real people, in real places, performing real duties.

Operation Overflight: A Memoir of the U-2 Incident

This book is certainly a must have for the Cold War, Military Aviation and Spy afficionados out there! While the authors did their best to make the most of what little details Powers did/could provide them - especially about the actual missions he flew for the CIA - they failed to do justice to the historical significance of the event. Powers' actual flights and missions in the U-2 are not discussed in great detail (they never even mention the plane's actual altitude, there are no details about the U-2 except for some hearsay info on its imagined structural integrity (or lack thereof), and they assigned less than a page to discuss the other "special missions"), and there are very few details about the mission the book was actually written about. What you will nevertheless be able to read in detail about are his time spent in Russian prisons, the KGB interrogations, or his kind Latvian roomate Zigurd in Vladimir prison. The final section of the book is spent on the well-justified trashing of the CIA (afterall they gave him the shaft the same way NASA did to the Apollo 13 crew), and Powers provides some great insights into the personal dealings of the Agency. Reading it today, Powers' observations were way ahead of their time! You'll appreciate Powers Jr's epilogue that puts the entire book in perspective. Overall it is a great book, the only first-hand account of the U-2 incident you'll ever have, and as a matter of fact, I'll go and read it again!

As a tiny house fan, I have mixed feelings on this one

It's well laid out by sizes, and It's refreshing to see so many floor plans of layouts for tiny homes you could actually live in long term without going crazy, ( much bigger than the usual 8x16)... But a lot of the plans are for cabin sized floor plans that would actually be considered "small homes" vs tiny homes, because at 12' or wider, they could not be placed on wheels or easily transported. There were some refreshing ideas for layouts ( an accomplishment when you consider the limits of options caused by a width of 8-8.5'). I would like to have seen more side entry ideas ( a personal preference of mine because I feel an end entry limits the design and wastes wall use), but many of these floor plans could be adapted easily to a side entry. I was also hoping for some options with narrow stairs to sleeping lofts instead of ladders..... also a personal preference if mine.

Unlike some reviewers I didn't expect a book full of working floor plans and materials lists for this price, and no rational thinking person should. In spite of the numerous plans for homes that do not qualify as "tiny" or towable I liked the book. Especially intriguing, the plans that stretched the length to over 24' and those that included a small office or store front on the end.... Great for folks on the move to generate money on the road, and easily converted to a studio space for artists wanting to live full time tiny while keeping the clutter of creating art out of the living space.If you're downsizing and dreaming of building a tiny house, this book is worthy of some of your shelf space.

floor plans galore!

This book is exactly as advertised -- a book of tiny house floor plans. I have no intention of building a tiny house, but I love both floor plans and tiny houses, so I really enjoyed this book. The plans aren't complete enough to use for building anything, but the variety of features and layouts demonstrate how unique a tiny house can be. There are plans for a variety of sizes and preferences. If you are the kind of person who thinks every tiny house is the same, you will change your mind after you look at this book.

A tiny house addict's dream.

This is a very simple book with page after page of floor plans for tiny (REALLY TINY) houses on or off wheels. It is 'mind-candy' for those of us who want tiny homes of our own. No formal plans, just easy to think about line drawings for very tiny to larger tiny (yes, there is such a thing) houses. Some have features with just lofts for sleeping, some can accommodate sleep sofas on the main level and some have a tiny separate area in the back suitable for a tiny office, shop or guest room. When I travel this book is one that automatically gets popped into my backpack so I can keep considering ideas. The house size progresses from tiniest to largest so by the end one is seeing plans that lack very little in the way of comforts. All of the plans are sized to be built on trailers if you wish so you never have to 'leave home'. Who needs a tiny home on wheels (or not)? College students/graduates, people who like the idea of living simply, for use as a vacation retreats, "Granny-Flats", temporary housing, and more. Terrific resource for planning.
