A history of, rather than how to, rebuild Carterbrocks

This book is a good source of knowledge on the history of Carter and Edelbrock carburetors. The book deals primarily with the Carter Thermo-quad, Edelebrock AFB and AVS, and Will Carter Four Barrel (WCFB). Early chapters deal with the history of Carter and it's subsequent merging into modern day Edelbrock. Alot of good info for those not familiar with carbs, especially TQ's and AFB/AVS. Those looking for a step by step book would probably be best served with a technical manual on the carb though. Rebuilding is reserved for the last chapter or two and is, while the pictures are good, the text is a little lite in that area.

Good overview of topic, but lacking detail

This book covered the history of the Carter/Edelbrock companies and the variety of carburetor products they have offered. I personally was more interested in getting my carburetor tuned and less about history and how a carburetor works...although the latter is useful information to the uneducated. The information on tuning was pretty weak. There just wasn't a good step-by-step procedure laid out. I did better by downloading the "owner's manual" on line. However, if interested in rebuilding your carburetor, the step-by-step with color pictures is nice.

I am really bothered by frequent typos in textbooks. With all the work put into collecting the information, is it too hard to edit the text once more? If there is a One True Medical Microbiology Book, this isn't it.

Here's an example of academic laziness in this book. On p. 128, the book mentions that for budding viruses, virus-infected cells will have virus-derived glycoproteins on their surface, making them immune targets. Then it says that cytotoxic T cells recognize these antigens. Of course, T cells don't have B cell receptors and cannot recognize surface epitopes directly. It should have said that affected cells can become coated with antibody, becoming targets for ADCC, which is performed by NK cells.

Great book, but they left out a lot

Don't throw away your Fourth Edition! The Fifth Edition has a lot to recommend it: much better artwork, more sensible organization of basic theory and microbe-specific detail, up-to-date pathophysiology and therapies, etc. In the Preface the editors state that much material has been "trimmed" to keep this edition the same size as the previous one. "Trimmed" is a euphemism for "dummied-down". They should have opted for a bigger book. First, they left out all the references; not a single one is to be found. This was a valuable feature of the Fourth Edition, and pointed to much relevant material for further study. A cryptic excuse for this is that the emphasis is on the "text narrative", not reference material. That's nonsense; all good medical textbooks have references.

There has been a turnaround of authors in this multi-authored book. The new guys seem to have ignored several changes in the taxonomy of bacteria and viruses, such as the designation of Flavivirus as a Family and the split of Papovavirus into Papillomavirus and Polyomavirus. The new tables still contain the old errors, such as asserting that Hepatitis B is a Family when in fact it belongs to the Hepadnaviridae Family. There are numerous little errors like this that have been carried over from the Fourth Edition; apparently, the new authors cut-and-pasted what looked good without examining it for accuracy.

The stuff that was "trimmed" was not "older and less important information", as stated in the Preface. The editors apparently have figured out that USMLE-obsessed students are more interested in answering test questions than understanding anything, so a lot of viral and bacterial anatomy has been cut. We can now view these entities as more of a black box than something with important innards.

Some of the ambiguous or unclear explanations of the Fourth Edition have been carried over to the Fifth, such as the description of the One Step Growth Experiment, which would be unintelligible were it not for Wikipedia.

I cannot find an errata page for any Lange textbook. This is a Good Thing, since we can now rest assured that there are never any errors in their books. Too bad there isn't a contact form for sending suggestions for improvement for the next edition; this is a really good book, but apparently they don't need the likes of you and me to make it even better. Don't bother sending suggestions to Customer Service; it will be filed away by someone unfamiliar with the word "enzyme".

The Preface references a web site which purportedly contains an "online learning center" with lots of extra stuff, like "additional cases, questions, and study aids". As of this writing, it is vaporware, and I've complained to the publisher. In fact, Lange doesn't even have a reference to this (Fifth) edition up yet. Maybe all this will be in place by the time you read this.

If you don't have the Fourth Edition, you can probably get it very cheap, and I suggest you do so (in addition to buying the Fifth Edition) for the references and the enhanced technical detail.

Good book

As a first year medical student I've really enjoyed this book. I think it's tough to make an all inclusive book on microbiology but Sherris does a pretty good job. I think it's got the right balance of clinical and micro information for a med student. I love the little summary lines they put in the margins- it helps you pick out the most important stuff and skim through stuff you already know or don't need to know. Very readable- not too dense, not to superficial. I was a microbiology major in college and had a lot of books that went into much more depth on stuff like molecular biology and had very little clinical information and so, again, for medical students and board prep, I think this has the right combination of material.

An easy read with moral undertones.

I enjoy these books as pure entertainment. During the first 3 we marveled at the preparation that went into the survival of the lead characters. The one complaint that I do have is that the characters are too one dimensional - the good guys are good through and through and the bad guys are purely horrible. No one is conflicted or has many sides - like most of us do in real life. Having said that I am committed to each member of the group and have grown to root for the "home team" each time they are challenged.
Eagerly waiting for the next installment - "Missing".

A filler nothing exciting

A filler nothing exciting, blah blah blah. The only good part was when they went to rescue a bunch of hostages from a gang of convicts. I wish more detailed went into that part, but it was okay. In all honestly this 'Kumbaya' attitude will get these people killed more so than, hey let's work together for the greater good. Still the story was interesting.

This series is fascinating! The Characters are fleshing out with each new book. They started out a little flat, but the plot line was so interesting that I kept buying each new title. If you like apocalyptic sagas you will like this series but you must read them in order. Well worth the price! Mr. Maloney if you ever read this review please can you tell us what happened to the brothers who where the peppers and cold weather hunters? I think they were David's brothers. I really think that their story coming to Salt Mountain would be fascinating! I can only imagine the utter joy of finding family that survived all the destruction. The hope that it would mean! Please keep the story coming!

A Classic and Thorough Book - Only Somewhat Dated

This is an excellent book - and one of the clasics on the subject of IC Engine Engineering. It's a good anchor for the student new to the subject - as most of the basic theory can't really change. Having said that, it doesn't go far enough with practical simulation methods, which have become much easier to apply as computers have matured. And there is - as always in typical engineering texts - not much to use in terms of practical design. But then - such a book would be much longer. And - because engine control capability has improved so much in the last 15 years, as has knowledge of pollutant formation and control - this book simply does not have much of use (other than as an introuction) to those areas. That's why I gave it 4 stars, not 5. Still a good read for the engineer.

still a classic, but where is a 3rd edition?

Sadly there will be no 3rd edition by Taylor. He died in 1996, at the age of 102. These volumes remain classics. Written by a person whose life spanned most of the development of the internal combustion engine, and who worked for the Wright brothers.

The book gives an excellent education in the basic physics of the engine. Nor does the book confine itself to a strict 4 stroke engine. It also covers the two stroke engine, typically found in motorcycles and lawnmowers. The comparison between the 4 and 2 stroke designs are especially illuminating. It gives you an idea of the defining properties of both, and their relative limitations.

Perhaps Taylor's estate can find someone suitably talented to co-author a third edition. The second edition dates from 1985, and there have been improvements in this field. Somewhat modest perhaps, but the progress of time makes those changes sufficient to deserve recognition in a book of this repute. Plus, the currently perceived high price of petrol is leading to investigations of improved engine performance, be this in such areas as fuel mixtures or mechanical configuration. Another incentive to update the text.

Bible of ICE design

This is the bible of Internal Combustion Engine design. Every automotive engineer has one (or has access to one at work) for reference. Excellent for engineering students also. Not a book for people with no engineering or automotive background. Also not a book of the "latest and greatest" developments. It is a detailed book of fundamentals, and in that capacity it is excellent.

Professor Homburg is the author of numerous publications and a regular speaker at various conferences.

Dr. Heiko Schäfer was a research assistant at Professor Homburg's chair and a freelance corporate consultant. After having worked for several years as a corporate consultant at a renowned American consulting firm, he is now head of the strategy-global operations department at adidas.

Dr. Janna Schneider was a research assistant at Professor Homburg's chair. Today, she is head of the marketing and international sales department at AHS Prüfungstechnik, an international mechanical engineering company.

A must for Sales Managers

As sales executive of a medium-sized company I can't continuously purchase expensive consulting services to optimize sales management. For many of the major problems that have emerged in the last years, Sales Excellence offers concrete solutions. Further, it's definitely interesting how the Germans organize their sales. For me it is currently the best Sales book for managers.

Great guideline

Finally, a sales book that's not only limited to the "ten golden rules in personal selling". The book really covers in detail all possibilities to improve a company's sales approach. It is full of checklists and practical examples, but does not lack of a scientific foundation. In some places it becomes apparent that the authors are not native speakers. Nevertheless, great book! It really helped me to reorganize sales.

The authors succeeded in providing a scientific book that has many practical references – and this combination is, unfortunately, very rare. The given checklists to evaluate the status quo helped me a lot to approach and finally to address problems I was facing. The key topics of this book are the Sales strategy and Sales management as well as the information and customer relationship management. Additionally, many other facets give a broad perspective on Sales. It contributes to systematize your work due to its structured guidelines how to deal with a certain opportunity or challenge. What I liked most was that it was so practical-related; there are many Best-Practice examples that help to understand the issue as well as to enhance the ability to behave in the appropriate manner. The graphics contribute to the understanding of what is explained in detail in the texts. With its four parts, this book covers all the topics that are relevant for the daily tasks of a Sales Manager. It is more relevant than ever before – not only for experienced managers but also for managers who are still looking for their appropriate style. Big compliment to that well-done book.
