Silkenat looks at five groups caught up in this floodtide of emigration: enslaved African Americans who fled to freedom; white Unionists; pro-Confederate whites―both slave owners (who often forced their slaves to migrate with them) and non–slave owners; and young women, often from more besieged areas of the South, who attended the state’s many boarding schools. From their varied experiences, a picture emerges of a humanitarian crisis driven by mobility, shaped by unprecedented economic pressures and disease vectors, and exacerbated by governments unwilling or unable to provide meaningful relief.

For anyone seeking context to current refugee crises, Driven from Home has much to say about the crushing administrative and logistical challenges of aid work, the illusory nature of such concepts as home fronts and battle lines, and the ongoing debate over links between relief and dependence.

Great information, presentation could be better

Searching for a book specifically on Panuntukan yields very few results. Reviews of Faye's 'A Guide To Pananutukan' are very encouraging and make this book first choice out of the few available.

As a novice trainee in the art I can only agree with the reviews. The information is particularly useful and well written, and comes from an experienced pratictioner of the art who has established a great following for himself. The format of the book is of a step-by-step illustrated training manual aimed at teaching the basics of the system.

If I were to comment on any negative points regarding the publication, the only one would be on its presentation. Considering the trouble I found in sourcing what seemed to be at the time the only available copy of the book left on the internet (from the author's own online store in fact!), I was a little disappointed with the format of the print.

The book is presented as an A4-sized plastic ring-bound print out, that could easily be mistaken for a domestic-quality MS Word-style document printed out on average-quality paper (single side printing only). The quality of the illustrative photo images can tend to be pixelated, giving a rather unprofessional look.

I understand that the idea of the book is to be a sequential training manual including a notes section for recording progress and development - however, the impression of the new, first-hand copy of the book I received is that someone simply printed me out a copy in the office and put it in the post..!

I believe that the price I paid for this valuable information is fair; I do also believe however that the publication would greatly benefit from a revamp in the quality of illustrative images and particularly in the print format. I would however still recommend this book to anyone interested in Panantukan.

...to quote Alan Davies. After reading this, you'll feel the same way. Like The Book of General Ignorance, this book exists to burst whatever bubble of knowledge you think you know... Only with animals.

I love the QI series, and I felt a twinge docking this one star, but the reason is simple: two pages maximum for each of the animals spotlighted. And they are: aardvark, albatross, anglerfish, ant, armadillo, badger, bat, bear, beaver, bee, beetle, binturong, bison, box jellyfish, butterfly, cane toad, capercaillie, cat, catfish, cheetah, chimpanzee, cicada, comb jelly, coral, cow, crane, dog, dolphin, donkey, eagle, echidna, eel, elephant, ferret, flea, fly, fossa, fox, frog, giant tortoise, gibbon, giraffe, goat, goose, gorilla, hedgehog, hoatzin, horse, human, hummingbird, hyena, kangaroo, koala, komodo dragon, leech, lion, lizard, lobster, louse, mite, mole, monkey, moose, mouse, naked mole bat, octopus, owl, pangolin, parrot, pearl oyster, penguin, pig, pigeon, platypus, porcupine, quoll, rabbit, raccoon, rat, salamander, scorpion, sea cow, sea cucumber, seal, shark, sheep, snake, spider, starfish, tapir, tardigrade, termite, toad, tuatara, walrus, wasp, whale, woodlouse, woodpecker, and worm. Whew. All right, so not every animal featured is common enough to have acquired any knowledge about it, never mind being slammed as misinformed.

So, 203 pages (including tailpiece), plus Foreword by Stephen Fry, Forepaw by Alan Davies, Introduction by Johns Mitchinson & Lloyd. With illustrations by Ted Dewan. Some of what's in this book has already been covered by the TV programme. And, like the TV series, this book can be very cheeky. Like how about a diagram of scorpion foreplay? ...Actually, that sentence makes it sound dirtier than it is, but you get the idea. As its soubriquet proclaims, what's on these pages is 'Quite Interesting'. Like how well do spiders spin their webs in zero-gravity? While high on marijuana? While high on caffeine? What do moose have to do with Scandinavian auto manufacturers? What association do geese and barnacles have that led to the naming of the Barnacle Goose (Branta leucopsis) and the Goose Barnacle (Lepas anatifera)?

Read this to find the answers to these questions and loads of other questions no one but the QI team would ever pose.

I love this book, full of weird and wonderful facts about some common and not so common animals. It was well researched and over all a thoroughly enjoyable read! There wasn't anything I disliked apart from it ending too soon. I would recommend this book to any animal lovers or people who are interested in unusual facts

If you are looking for something out of the ordinary, funky and entertaining, this is it!

I am somewhat of a naturalist yet I was intrigued by the compilation of weird and interesting stuff.

Definitely worth the purchase price for the humor alone.

For philosophers

This book does not claim to be more than An Essay in the Philosophy of Music and addresses itself primarily to the question "What Is a Work?" I can see that this is a hot issue in early music, but in the last two centuries, I had thought that these matters had all been thrashed out by the Absurdists and copyright lawyers. Evidently, philosophers are still chewing on this question. Try, "Character indifference is a reflexive, symmetric, and transitive relation which, by obtaining, produces a class of character-indifferent inscriptions under the partition generated by this relation" (p.23). However, the arcane terminology of professional philosophers, particularly the post-modernists, can look like bafflegab to a layperson. Do you exist? Do I? Is there any such thing as Reality? Skipping over those, the author asks some tough questions, such as "How much liberty should the conductor be allowed in interpreting an orchestral score?" There are deep discussions here, but the author does not offer firm answers and I believe I've seen more concise answers in other books. If your interest is mainly in music history of the last two centuries, this will be slow going for a meager yield.

I really enjoyed it

I found this book to be thoroughly engrossing, exciting, and fascinating. I frequently get into all sorts of hand-waving strange arguments with people, about "musical works" (e.g. my pseudo-"composition"/appropriation work "Your Life Up To This Moment"), and in Lydia Goehr's book, I found a very useful framework for thinking clearly and critically about such things.
