love it!

i actually found this book but for base at a garage sale, when my friend told me it wasn't for violin i ordered this one. i love how it gives you exercises and breaks things down for you, it's helped me and i definitely recommend it to someone who is just beginning to learn to play the violin! seeing as that i never payed attention in music class when i was a kid, thinking that i wouldn't want to learn to play an instrument anyway, this book has helped me in remembering the strings and how to read sheet music. the basic stuff at least.

Served a good cause

Purchased this book for a friend who has his master's in Energy Engineering. He wants to change the Energy Policy in Afghanistan and was in great need of this book. It took us over 2 months and loads of trouble to get the book there. I hope that it provided good value and became a good resource for the Engineering Faculty in Kabul University. Our goal is to build the Kabul Universities Engineering Faculty library with up to date books and reference manuals for students to be able to learn from cutting edge theories and advancments in energy sector.

This book is intense. It is not your typical preachy, condescending, one-or-two-good-nuggets, self-help trash. It is a deep, thought provoking, intelligent analysis of love, pulling from research in areas such as psychoanalysis, literature, the arts, and philosophy. Truly compelling and brilliant and a slow read. A must read for anyone who is experiencing or wants to experience deep passionate love. You will gain a better understanding of the "madness" of this truly complex emotion.

About the Author
The Made Ridiculously Simple Series was founded by Stephen Goldberg. A graduate of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, he subsequently trained in Neurology, becoming Board Certified in Ophthalmology and Family Medicine.

As a faculty member at the University of Miami School of Medicine, both in the Family Medicine and Cell Biology/Anatomy Departments, he has been involved in the education of medical students and residents for the past 25 years. Dr. Goldberg has received the George Paff Award for Teaching Excellence at the University of Miami School of Medicine eleven times since its inception in 1985.

He has authored a number of titles in the MedMaster series and has worked with other authors in an editorial capacity. His first book, Clinical Neuroanatomy Made Ridiculously Simple has sold over 300,000 English edition copies.

Should be the first physiology text for a MSI or PA student.

I still recommend this to med students that I teach. I love that there are only 2 chapters:

1 - Cardio-Pulmonary-Renal
2 - Everything else.

Goldberg is brilliant. As Einstein said, things should be as simple as possible, but no simpler. This book hits the sweet spot..

Use as directed, separate the forest from the trees!

I'm a first year Med student and have found this book to be a valuable resource. The explanations are perfect for gaining a broad understanding of often difficult subjects before diving into the textbooks and journals.
The chapters about fluid/electrolyte balance and immunology are incredible, clarifying concepts that I had struggled through previously. In addition, clinical correlations augment the discussion of normal physiology, keeping things real for those us getting early clinical exposure on the wards. The author implements useful drawings and flowcharts that further simplify complex material. For example, the immunology "cartoon" flowchart is perfect for understanding the central role of CD4 cells in binding to an MHC2, and depicting the numerous downstream events of adaptive immunity. In takes about an hour or two to plow through a chapter (and actually understand everything), but in the end, you have a great foundation that can be enhanced through lectures or PBL depending on your program.
Regarding the negative reviews below, what do these people expect from such a thin book? The author even admits in his preface that it should be used in conjunction with a text. I don't feel this book is intended for USMLE preparation or as a "study guide" for a medical school exam. These reviewers would be better served with a large spoon, a copy of Guyton, and a bib.
Clinical Phys made ridiculously simple dumbs down complex subjects and gives you a big picture understanding of how things work- this is the first book I've come across that makes learning physiology simple and efficient. In addition, I've found the Radiology, Anatomy and Microbiology books in this series to be particularly useful so far.

excellent resource

As with other books by Dr. Goldberg, this one is nothing short of miraculous! Through a systems-based approach, an otherwise complicated and tedious subject is transformed into an accesible and enjoyable voyage. Quite honestly, you should leave your standard thick physiology texts in the corner to use for curls or bench pressing... this book ABSOLUTELY encompasses the key knowledge of physiology in a fraction of the time. It seems like a gimmick, but it isn't. Having graduated from med school a few years ago, I can still say with authority that this book will serve you well into the future, not to mention on your next test, which will undoubtedly include mostly clinically oriented questions which, in turn, can ALL be answered after a careful and thoughtful review of this book. Don't waste any more time... read this one first! --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

About the Author

K. C. Chang, the late John E. Hudson Professor of Anthropology at Harvard University, was the author of many books, including The Archaeology of Ancient China, published by Yale University Press. Xu Pingfang is the former director of the Institute of Archaeology of the Academy of Social Sciences in Beijing. Sarah Allan is the Burlington Northern Foundation Chair of Asian Studies at Dartmouth College and the author of numerous books.

A Comprehensive Review

"The Formation of Chinese Civilization" reviews the archaeology of early China, from the earliest appearance of humans in the Paleolithic era, to the unification of the Chinese state in the Qin and Western Han dynasties. It is one of the volumes in Yale's China series. Organization is chronological, and each chapter is written by a different author. The book is beautifully illustrated, although the photos of museum objects are mostly "window dressing:" this is a book about archaeology, not art history.

Since the authors are all senior Chinese archaeologists, the reader will find authoritative commentary and an orthodox viewpoint throughout the book. Orthodoxy in this case means that the authors all subscribe to the idea that humans originated independently in China, and followed a civilizational development through progressive stages of matriarchy, patriarchy, slave society, etc., per standard Marxist theory. In practice, however, the authors' wide experience and knowledge more than compensate for any lingering ideological difficulties.

Although no one could accuse this book of being undersized, I found that many important topics were only touched on very briefly. Sanxingdui is given only one and one-half columns; only two columns for the Great Wall; the whole discussion of final Qin-Han unification is disappointingly short. In compensation, at least brief mention is made of numerous recent excavations that bear on the questions - of state formation and the development of Chinese civilization - addressed in this book. Some major conclusions are: the multi-regional nature of early China; cultural continuity from earliest times; the importance of religion (shamanism) in culture and politics; and the interplay between lineage (family) and territory in the formation of the Chinese state.

Although hardly for beginners, most serious students of Chinese archaeology will want to read through this volume.

when i brought the item i did not think it would take the whole 3 weeks to get to me, but thankfully my midterm wasn't until later so it was not that big of a deal. Overall the experience was good and the book was in great condition.
