About the Author
Gerald Corey is Professor Emeritus of Human Services and Counseling at California State University at Fullerton. He received his doctorate in counseling from the University of Southern California. He is a Diplomate in Counseling Psychology, American Board of Professional Psychology; a licensed psychologist; and a National Certified Counselor. He is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association (Division 17, Counseling Psychology; and Division 49, Group Psychotherapy); a Fellow of the American Counseling Association; and a Fellow of the Association for Specialists in Group Work. Both Jerry and Marianne Corey received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Mental Health Counselors Association in 2011, and both also received the Eminent Career Award from ASGW in 2001. Dr. Corey was given the Outstanding Professor of the Year Award from California State University at Fullerton in 1991. He regularly teaches both undergraduate and graduate courses in group counseling and ethics in counseling. He is the author or coauthor of 15 textbooks in counseling currently in print, along with more than 60 journal articles and book chapters. In the past 40 years Jerry and Marianne Corey have conducted group counseling training workshops for mental health professionals at many universities in the United States as well as in Canada, Mexico, China, Hong Kong, Korea, Germany, Belgium, Scotland, England, and Ireland.

Marianne Schneider Corey, a licensed marriage and family therapist in California, is a National Certified Counselor and a fellow of the Association for Specialists in Group Work. She has been actively involved in providing training and supervision workshops in group process for human-services students and professionals. She also facilitates self-exploration groups for graduate students and continues to conduct training workshops in group counseling with her husband, Dr. Gerald Corey, in various countries. In 2001, the two received the Eminent Career Award for distinguished and major contributions to the field of group work by the Association for Specialists in Group Work.

Cindy Corey is a California-licensed psychologist in private practice in San Diego and on the faculty at San Diego State University Community-Based Block Program. She received her doctorate in psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology, Los Angeles.

Patrick Callanan is a licensed marriage and family therapist in private practice in Santa Ana, California, and a National Certified Counselor. In his private practice he works with individuals, couples, and families. Patrick is on the part-time faculty of the Human Services Program at California State University at Fullerton, where he regularly teaches the internship course. He also offers his time each year to the university to assist in training and supervising group leaders, and co-teaches an undergraduate course in ethical and professional issues.

Masters' Rehab Counseling Program Book

Very good book that allows easy reading. Dr. Corey makes in clear in all his books that the reader should develop their own way of handling consumers. Professionals and students should find this book outstanding scholastic material moving into the realm of counseling. There is not substitute for proper ethics.

INSTRUCTOR'S EDITION

This book came with a great deal of tape and "quality resold books" stickers on the front and spine. The book did not look like the picture posted. I peeled off the stickers and found it to be the instructor's edition. However, there does not seem to be much of a difference between the instructor's edition, and student edition. And it was a good price, and came in good timing. Just a warning that it is a bit of false advertising.

The Only Way to Build a Better Body

I sought more information on High Intensity training after reading a debate of volume training vs. High Intensity by Mike Mentzer and Dr. Stone in All Natural Muscular Development Magazine. Prior to reading the article I had not heard of High Intensity training. After reading the article I realized that I had no basic principles upon which I was building my training program. I would read an article in Flex and follow that, then another in MM2K and follow that; some routines produced results and some did not. I purchased the tape series and listened several times to each tape. I was apprehensive about trying the program because I too suffered from the notion that if I was not training 4 days a week for two hours I would lose my hard earned gains. Finally, I decided to follow the program and follow it exactly. I decided that even if the training program was wrong, I was better off having a rational basis for what I was doing and why I was doing it, then continuing to follow the next magazine article. The program presented also made a lot of sense. The results were nothing short of spectacular. For a 41 year old gu y I am very impressed. The information presented on the tapes is clear and easy to follow. I highly recommend this tape series to anyone who is serious about building a better body. Like me, it may also help you the think more critically about many other aspects of your life. Thanks Mike

Needed: less philosophy, more fitness. Otherwise, GREAT!

Mentzer's approach to strength building is exactly what we need - a true plan that really works! I've used this protocal now for almost 3 months and the results are fantastic. I am 52 and I have become more muscular now than ever in my life. What a relief to find out that you don't have to be a gym rat to achieve a physique that gets second looks.
A disappointment is the proportion of the tapes spent on philosophy. Only about half of the set concerns exercises and diet. I would have liked much more description of the exercises and why these particular routines were chosen. We are asked to have faith that they are the best. Incidently, having faith in what we are told is exactly what we are asked not to do in the philosophical Tape 1. I would describe the exercises in the sequencing chosen, however, as elegent. Only one suggestion from my experience - combine superslow cadence with High Intensity.
If you would like to build muscle, you won't find a more rational or efficient technique.

The oft-maligned and misunderstood Mentzer has created a masterpiece with these audiotapes, debunking those preaching the more-is-better nonsense. As for results, you will receive such if you follow the ideas contained inside. AMAZING.

The future of nostalgia isn't what it used to be, or at least it won't be once this book starts making its way through academic circles. A sort of training manual for the wistful, Boym's book alternates "between critical reflection and storytelling, hoping to grasp the rhythm of longing, its enticements and entrapments"; along the way, the author not only gives new life to an old idea but also offers a number of original terms that can be used to describe the experience. The first part of Boym's study surveys the history of nostalgia as a disease and introduces two varieties, a "restorative nostalgia" that may contain conspiratorial elements (the notion that a certain "they" have destroyed "our" homeland, for example), and a "reflective nostalgia" that leads to a sense of not being able to go home again. Part two deals with postcommunist cities such as Moscow and St. Petersburg (where Boym, now a Harvard professor of Slavic and comparative literature, worked as a tour guide in the late '70s) and may be of more interest to pure Russophiles than to intellectuals in general. The book's third and final section examines the work of Nabokov, Brodsky and other artists whom Boym calls, in her most useful contribution to critical vocabulary, "off-modern." Neither modern nor postmodern, these artists (and their ranks include such odd ducks from the last century as Igor Stravinsky, Walter Benjamin, Julio Cort zar and Georges Perec) "explore side shadows and back alleys rather than the straight road of progress." Thus the past may be conceptualized in any number of ways, and apparently, at least according to the author, the only truly pernicious nostalgia is the prefabricated, Disney-fied kind that keeps one from thinking about the future. Otherwise, says Boym, the sky, whether it's the one you see overhead or the one you remember, is the limit. (Apr.) The current U.S. craze for nostalgia runs from automobiles (the PT Cruiser) to fashion (the return of bell-bottoms) to television (TV Land reruns). Despite modern technology and conveniences, we enjoy looking back to yesterday. Boym (Slavic and comparative literature, Harvard Univ.; Death in Quotation Marks) divides her study of nostalgia into three parts. In the first section, she examines the history of nostalgia, once seen as an ailment to be cured. The second part focuses on cities, specifically Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Berlin, and on post-Communist memories. In Part 3, Boym probes what she calls the stories of exile, looking at the writings of Vladimir Nabokov, Joseph Brodsky, and others who wrote of lost homes. She also examines how nostalgia affects us today, citing movies like Jurassic Park and the subsequent interest in dinosaurs. In illuminating the ways that nostalgia has helped to falsify history, Boym traces its malign influence on modern ideologues of the left and right. But from literature and art, she gleans a different, less destructive nostalgia, one that reconciles us to our losses and invests our grief with meaning. Omnivorous scholarship yields a subtle typology of nostalgia, with illustrations from Dostoyevsky's novels and Baudelaire's poetry on the one hand, and from Jurassic Park and Revlon ads on the other. Boym's imaginative and scholarly gifts serve her especially well in explaining the mutating types of nostalgia that are transforming post-Communist countries and in probing the complex emotions of immigrants from such countries, exiles at once saddened by and fearful of their lost heritage. Wonderfully perceptive

This is one of the best books I've read in a long time -- fiction or nonfiction. Boym is quite perceptive about the immigrant mindset, expectations, and associated nostalgia. Unfortunately, she died only a few months ago. Her obit in the New York Times provides a nice overview, in case you are not familiar with her work.

I Miss Nostalgia and Now I Know Why!

One of the most fascinatingly themed books I have read in many years, but once it moved from its major theme, Nostalgia, to the second half of the book, her excruciatingly detailed narratives of the internal issues within Russian cities,quickly became very tedious and boring to a non-Russian.

In reality, Nostalgia is two separate books and each could well stand on its own.

This amazing book has been efficiently described by its Editorial Reviews. It is ingenious, absorbing, and by turns difficult and thrilling. Do not be misled by the kitschy or simplistic associations you might have to the term "nostalgia." Exile, either voluntary or forced - no small thing either way - is its precondition.
Many, but far from all, of the examples and references are Russian and Eastern European. Each of the seventeen chapters is an essay of depth and precision. They are greatly satisfying: rich and dense with associations and references from art and literature, and the entire span of recorded human history.

Nostalgia, she asserts (and proves convincingly) is "the disease of an afflicted imagination." It afflicts those who would become assimilated to their new worlds - as well as those who (variously and often highly individualistically) resist. The second section, "Cities and Re-invented Traditions" contains five chapters that focus on Russian and European conceptions and realities. The final part, "Exiles and Imagined Homelands" is my favorite. Its chapters cover among other things the excess of souvenirs to be found in immigrants' apartments (knickknacks of identity and remembrance that would not ever be displayed back home); cyberspace, which "makes the bric-a-brac of nostalgia available in digital form"; the persistence of immigrant eccentricity; the preservation (and transformation) of attitudes, and various phenomena of adjustment. Some of the personages discussed (for there is never mere name-dropping in this book) are Adam and Eve ("the first exiles") Ovid, Telemachus, Oedipus, Odysseus, Walter Benjamin, Freud, Hanna Arendt, painter Ilya Kabakov, Joseph Brodsky, and Vladimir Nabokov - to name a few.
I loved this book. There isn't a slow page in it. Boym is passionately interested in art, history, psychology, signs and symbols, literature, urbanism, politics, and people. She's a deep thinker who is guided by her considerable ability to keep several balls in the air at once, to teach with clarity, and to really understand what makes people tick. There's a good index and over thirty pages of notes that enable a lot of further reading in this big and interesting subject.
A great book that deserves more than five Amazon stars.

About the Author
Terryl Whitlatch is an accomplished, scientifically and academically trained illustrator who extensively studied vertebrate zoology and animal anatomy. She has worked for various zoos and museums in the United States and as senior consultant on Wildlife Art and Animal Anatomy for the World Wildlife Fund. She is considered to be one of the top creature designers and animal anatomists working in the field today. In a career spanning more than 25 years, Whitlatch has many projects to her credit, including Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, Star Wars: The Special Edition, Jumanji, Men in Black, Brother Bear, Dragonheart, Alvin and the Chipmunks, Curious George, The Polar Express, and Beowulf. For over seven years, she worked for Lucasfilm, Industrial Light & Magic, and George Lucas’s JAK Films. Her illustration skills and comprehensive knowledge of animal anatomy and movement are essential in the development of believable creature creation.

Not much of a guild, but a good looking artbook.

Shipping -- Great. Amazon said it will show up in two days and it did.

As a teaching book -- Not so much. There are pictures and some anatomy terms labeling parts of the body but I can get that from my animal anatomy and ornithology book. There's a brief for each chapter at the beginning discussing the "Principle".

Example pictures -- Think of it like the artist comments in Deviantart or other art-posting site. There is a bit telling you the description on most full page images.

As an artbook -- Good. Not so much teaching, a lot of reused art. If you have the Creatures real and imagine book, then you might want to skip this in terms of an artbook collection. The pictures are printed in high quality.

Classic Laumer - a MUST read

I first read this when I was in - what presently called "middle school" (it was Junior High back then). I fell in love with the writings of Keith Laumer then and lost myself in his cynical, tongue-in-cheek satire of the diplomatic service with his Evergreen "Retief" series. I even convinced my wife to read this book recently and she loved it - except for the end. SPOILER ALERT. She doesn't like "bad endings". Enough said. In my not-so-humble-opinion, you can still have a great book even if a major character buys the farm. I highly recommend this book!

Excellent, vintage Laumer SciFi/Fantasy

I read the title story many years ago & thoroughly enjoyed it so the re-reading was a treat. The short stories were well done & vintage Laumer. Only reason I didn't give it five stars was the 2nd 'novelette', (Night of Illusions) did not capture my interest. I personally dislike stories of dreams within dreams, illusions of illusions, & delusions on such a grand scale. On a side note, the 'cover art' of this particular copy is distracting & misleading. No such demon/monster is in any story in the book.

One of the Best 2nd Edition Products Back in Print

If you are like me you have worn out your Monstrous Manual from 1995. This is a very well done reprint by WOTC that is well worth picking up.

The cover has a green "fake leather" cover with gold lettering and some embossed areas. It looks much like the 1st edition reprints that came out last year. Very well done.

The binding looks sturdy and capable of withstanding many years of gaming.

The interior has golden brown flyleaves. The text and art work is very crisp. I was worried that the art work would be blurred like the 1st edition reprints but that is not the case here. I was surprised how nice it looked. The paper has a nice thick feel to it (more so than the original).

I have not checked extensively but it appears that the text was updated to fix some errata from the 'black book' version reprint.

I recommend picking up a copy of the book if your old one is looking worn or maybe just to slide onto the shelf next to the original. It is great to see 2nd Edition back in print.

AD&D 2nd edition is far from the best iternation of the game in my opinion. It was also my first introduction to the game and it will always have a special place in my heart. I fondly recall adventuring through the various 2nd edition box sets of the 80s and 90s and when I saw these premium rereleases for sale I couldn't help but purchase them.

As fickle as D&D fans can be, I should point out one very important caveat: These are not reprints of the original 2nd edition books. These are based on the revised releases from the early 90s. That being said, they are still a great addition for any collection and demonstrate the transitional stages from Gygax's AD&D to the WotC published 3rd edition.

A must for any collector or nostalgia ridden sucker, such as myself.

I was amazed at the quality of the book when it arrived. Not only is the outside of it beautiful, but the artwork inside is much more crisp than it uses to be.

As far as monster manuals go this is one of the best. The ammount of monsters is great and the stat blocks are easy to read.
