About the Author
Kari Dunn Buron is an autism resource specialist in Minnesota. Kari has worked with students with autism spectrum disorders for over 20 years, has served as president of the Minnesota Autism Society, and works with the Minnesota Autism Network to bring training opportunities to teachers. Kari also developed the ASD certificate program at Hamline University and is the director of Camp Discovery, a summer camp for children with Asperger Syndrome. Kari recently received a fellowship that will allow her to travel throughout the world studying Asperger Syndrome to help determine the critical elements of an appropriate educational program.

Mitzi Beth Curtis is an autism resource specialist in Minnesota and serves as an adjunct instructor for Hamline University’s autism certificate program. She has worked in special education, supported employment, and residential programs for individuals with disabilities since 1978. Her youngest sister, Maria, sent her on this journey with her birth in 1963.

As a teacher of autistic children, this book is invaluable. It is written in language that is easy for my students to understand and follow the directions..... I would be lost with it.

Five Stars for Five Point Scale

The concept in this book is one of those that makes you say, "Well YEAH, DUH." Because it's so simple and workable you wished you'd thought of it yourself! The basic premise is any behavior goal you want to work on with a child can be addressed in a five point scale. I'll give my son as an example. He yells like a maniac...when he's just talking in his normal voice. This drives me CRAZY. So, his scale is 5: I'm being kidnapped, or I'm just having a really, really, really good time on the playground OUTSIDE. 4. Loud play, but not ear piercing. 3. NORMAL INSIDE VOICE (my favorite) 2. Shhhh, whisper and 1. SILENCE (okay, I fibbed, many times THIS is my favorite.) It can also be used for expressing how the CHILD is FEELING. Anxiety levels, fear levels. The idea is that you can address many different issues whether at home or school, it gives clear examples, reproducable sheets and it's an easy concept for teachers, parents and kids to understand. I also love the companion book "When My Autism Gets Too Big", which I highly recommend for kids (and for the adults who care about them.) Incidentally, while the examples in the book are color coded and they are ingeneious ways to implement them in the school and classroom--as a parent I think that there's a reason gave me FIVE FINGERS! The Incredible Five Point Scale of course!! When I hold up three fingers, my son's voice automatically lowers because it's his signal to go DOWN on the scale.

Great book! Fun, nice visuals. Also, there is a DVD, which is a great way to demonstrate the program and have all team members (at home and at school) on the same page.

Fun for Students with Autism

I purchased this book for work with teens with Asperger's Syndrome (AS) and related disorders. It is Incredible! My students have a limited emotional vocabulary and an "all-or-nothing" sense of their upsets or other issues. The Five Point Scale can be adapted for most situations. My students are learning to create their own Five Point Scales; they draw their five faces to represent the range of how a particular feeling looks, for example "When I'm Frustrated." Next we are going to use photographs - students taking pictures of their five faces to foster intra-personal intelligence (how my face looks when I'm ...) and learn how to emotionally self-regulate (when i feel my face getting up to a 3 I should . . . ). My only criticism is that the scale is not consistent in it's ratings. One area uses 1 as Lowest and 5 as highest [e.g. ANGER: 1 = annoyed and 5 is rage/melt down]. Another scale is reversed with 1 as the highest and 5 the lowest. This confuses the students so we change the scale for consistency. The Incredible Five Point Scale is useful scale for teachers and parents of students who need support in emotional self-regulation, not just those with autism. It is concrete, visual, and students are engaged in their own learning when they develop their personal scale to use. Adults could use the activities in this book in a fun way with the students so that they are engaged in their own learning. It is much better than arguing or lecturing an upset teen.

Alan Moore and Mitch Jenkins's jazz

I found this book troubling in that it challenged my expectations of an Alan Moore work. This is almost free form literary jazz over the life of Steve Moore. The photography is top notch excellent. The story is winding and unconstrained with only really the final few pages settling back down into a typical narrative - and even that narration is decidedly unsettling.

This is something I had to read twice: once I read it thinking I was reading the usual unusual Alan Moore work, and that reading was failing me (or I it). Then I went back to it trying to feel the rhythms, to experience it rather than to "read" it, and I liked it a lot more. I've heard parts of Alan's musical version of this book: I feel like the two together would make for an excellent experience.

It's an extremely interesting piece. I don't think it's for everyone, but is marvelously well done.

Best author in the genre since Patrick O'Brien!

I have read a lot of books in this genre. Over the years I've mixed a lot of fictional series about figures in the British Navy and non-fictional books about British Naval history on battles and exploration. The one aspect that I've consistently found lacking in historical fiction is that the main characters are never exposed to the kind of diversity that accompanies real life. And anyone who has read Dudley Pope's "Ramage" series knows that reading about the guy who has the most dangerous job on earth never gets hurt, never misses the kiss the with the girl, and never always escapes punishment, can get pretty tiring. In this series Dewey Lambdin (author) introduces us to Alan Lewrie; a young man who is intelligent but limits his own successes through a series of very human mistakes that any young person would make.

For the first time since I finished the Master and Commander series I actually feel as I'm reading a novel about a person and not some overly-virtuous and indestructible demigod (like Ramage, Hornblower, and too many other fictional characters). And I am truly enjoying this read!

The only detracting thing about this series would be that if I had young children I may not let them read it because there is a small amount of sexual content that may not be suitable for small kids. Fortunately I'm an adult and can enjoy the amazing prose that Dewey Lambdin brings us!

Good storytelling on multiple levels. Still a bit too much "Tom Jones Goes to Sea" but improving after the first book: The King's Coat. Interesting examination of American Revolutionary events from a Torry point-of-view. Excellent sailing detail without allowing nomenclature to replace story. Overly involved in details of local geography and historic weaponry. Treatment of female characters, while probably true to the period, is outrageous to the modern mode. Mayhaps a strong woman character will emerge along with the mysterious French Admiral who appears only in reference. Hints on both fronts abound. Hooked on series.

The author continues the story in the second novel of the series with the main character's involvement in the battle of Yorktown. The author does a magnificent job at recreating history of the battle and detailing the accurate geography of the areas he refers to. He also stays true to the history of the weapons and strategies of war employed during this time period.

Best "diet" book I've read in years - perhaps in forever!

It is rare that I am wowed by a new diet or fitness book these days. As a long-time fitness enthusiast, Boston marathoner, certified sports and exercise nutritionist, and certified Food for Life cooking instructor, I am a prolific reader of all things health, wellness, diet, nutrition, and exercise, and most books in this genre seem to have one (or more) of the following problems: (1) they are based on the flavor of the day and not on trusted science; (2) they represent short-term band-aids to lifelong issues - "get your best body in 90 (or 30, or 60) days"; (3) they focus on one aspect of a healthy lifestyle (such as diet or exercise or diet and exercise but not your mind and emotions); and/or (4) they do not provide a practical guide for healthy living that can be incorporated into your own lifestyle and adapted to your own preferences. The One One One Diet (although the name makes it sound like another trendy diet fad) miraculously avoids these common diet book pitfalls, and I give it 5 glowing stars for its nutritional soundness, simplicity, and lifestyle friendliness.

The basis of the diet - which is actually tauted as a lifelong nutrition plan and not a short-term diet - is that you eat frequently throughout the day (3 meals, 2 snacks) to keep your blood sugar stable and your hunger at bay. Each meal should be balanced with a serving each of protein, carbs, and fats. Nonstarchy veggies are "free" foods that can bulk up any meal in terms of volume and nutrients. Snacks have the same calculus except that meat and grain servings (if any) served as snacks should be cut in 1/2. And that's it. No macronutrients are off limits. No food is a no-no. You can drink wine. Or eat chocolate. But in moderation and in balance. There are no complicated meal plans (although the book does include some great meal ideas and tasty recipes). If you follow the Paleo diet, you can use 1:1:1. If you are vegetarian (or vegan), you can use 1:1:1. If you are lactose (or gluten, or peanut, or soy) intolerant, you can use 1:1:1. It is clear from the content of this book that the author, Rania Batayneh, who is a nutritionist with a Masters in Public Health, knows her nutrition science and perhaps more importantly, knows how to apply that science to make it work for each person's unique personality and lifestyle.

To provide a holistic view of weight loss and healthy living, The One One One Diet also addresses how to incorporate a balanced exercise plan into your lifestyle (i.e., cardio, strength and flexibility), and suggests multiple options depending upon your schedule and preferences. The book also discusses handling stress and emotional eating, two common triggers for falling off the diet and fitness wagon, and provides ideas for how to incorporate 1:1:1 when eating out at various types of restaurants. There are many testimonials from her clients throughout the book, and they seem genuine (and realistic - we're not talking losing 50 pounds in one month; we're talking about sustainable and healthy weight loss and long-term weight maintenance). Lifelong "Diet" Plan + Whats Working for Me

So, I HIGHLY recommend checking out this book. It makes everything so simple and really helped me create a healthy lifestyle.

I've read a ton of weight loss and diet books and have learned stuff through each one but this one was the easiest "diet" for me to stick with. I am in my mid 30's now with two kids, I have struggled with my weight for the past 5-6 years. Its been like a roller coaster, lose some weight on a plan, then gain it back.. over and over again.

About the "Diet"

First, I definitely use the word diet loosely here.
If you are like me you've probably read tons of diet books. The authors love to limit what types of foods you eat. Which makes it HARD to stick with. I can certainly understand why cutting out carbs would help you lose weight... But I couldn't stick with that long term so it was always tough for me to completely buy into that plan.
That's why I really like this book, it's a realistic way to eat, and something you can stick with for years. This is not a short term solution. It is a lifelong plan.

The premise of the diet

Just to briefly outline the diet. First you want to eat 5 times per day, eating 3 meals and 2 snacks. This type of eating always made the most sense to me so that you can keep your blood sugar high to prevent cravings. Each meal (and snack) should include 1 carb, 1 fat and 1 protein. The emphasis is on creating balanced meals.
No foods are off limits you just have to focus on creating balance and moderation which is MUCH easier to do than completely cutting out foods (at least for me).

Meal Plan Suggestions

The author goes on to tell many different meal plans you can use that fit into this diet. The suggestions are just ideas. You don't have to eat the things she said but it did make it easier for me to completely understand the premise of the diet. I have also tried many of the different ideas mentioned which has made it easier to get fully into the plan.

My Workout Plan

In my quest to lose weight I have read a ton of books and articles. I have found what I think is a good workout routine that I have been doing for a few months now. I will briefly outline it here in hopes that you find value in it as well.

The tough thing about workout routines is that they get boring after awhile. Doing the same thing everyday or twice a week is no fun! So, that was my motivation when making this routine, I wanted variety!

In total I workout 3-4 days a week. All 4 workouts are different.
1. Every week I go to my favorite zumba class at my gym. This class is awesome, I have been to some zumba classes that were just ok but the instructor for this one is great. See if you can find a similar class where you love the instructor and it makes it a lot easier to go.
2. One day of running in the gym (or outside). Sprinting up hills is a great workout. This burns a ton of fat and really works your legs and butt. Running is ok, but sprinting up hills is a must in my opinion. Find a hill that will take 45 secs to 1 minute to run up. Run up as fast as you can and then walk back down.
3. One day weight lifting. Exact methods are too much to cover here but workout major muscle groups.
4. One day easy cardio. Just running for 30-60 minutes one day a week.

In addition to all that, have a few additional tips. Every morning for breakfast I drink a protein shake. I read about the value of getting 30g of protein for breakfast and have found this really helps to lose weight. The science is escaping me right now, but in my experience this does help.

I also take the supplement Green Coffee Bean Extract. This supplement helps your body burn more fat, once I started to take it my losses did increase and I have stuck with it ever since. I've been taking it for 3-4 months now. Dr oz talked about it on his show, some people take it without changing their diet and exercise but I am trying to lose weight as fast as possible so I'm all about getting the best diet and exercise program I can!

I hope all this information can help you all lose more weight and meet your goals. It took me a long time to find out all the things that work for me, so hopefully I can speed up your learning period.

Finally! A Common Sense approach to weight loss.

Ever since college, I've struggled with my weight. I was never obese as a child or a teenager. But once I hit my 20s and 30s, I started gaining weight. At my heaviest, I weighted 260 pounds. I'm tall (about 5'11) so I didn't look awful, but I definitely feel as good. I also was diagnosed with both high blood pressure and high cholesterol. I finally realized it was time to make a change. I eventually decided to a modified version of Weight Watchers. I followed the eating plan, but didn't go to meetings. I was successful, I ended up losing 60 pounds. But eventually, I got frustrated and fell of the wagon. I ended up regaining about 20 pounds. It wasn't enough that I had to go back on my meds and none my clothes fit, but it was still disappointing. There were several things about the Weight Watchers plan that I found frustrating and hard to stick with. First, it was hard to stick to the plan during special events like holidays and parties. I enjoy going out to eat with friends on occasion. When I was following Weight Watchers, I was often confronted with a choice: Do I eat what I want, feel guilty, and blow my diet? or do I order something I don't really want just to stay true to my diet? I have to be honest, there were times when I ate and ordered things I really didn't want, just for the sake of staying true to my diet. When I first started Weight Watchers, the Points Plus system didn't bother me. But after a while, I got really tired of having to look up the point value for every single thing I put on my mouth. When I cook, I make a lot of casseroles. I do try to prepare healthy meals. But it got really tedious having to look up the point values for each ingredient in the casserole.

I have read countless diet books and haven't found one that really provided what I was looking for. Either they were too restrictive, too complicated, or didn't give me enough guidance about how and what to eat. I wanted to find a diet that didn't require any measuring, counting, or complicated formulas. I wanted a weight loss technique that gave me freedom to make my own choice, made nothing off limits, and could be easily incorporated into my lifestyle. I recently purchased a copy of Women's Day Magazine. In there, there was an article that mentioned this book and eating plan. To be honest, I was skeptical. I have found that if something sounds too good to be true, it usually is. But I was intrigued by the idea of 1:1:1 so I ordered a sample on my Kindle. I figured if I hated the book, I hadn't lost anything. I was so impressed by what I read in the sample that I immediately ordered the full book.

The premise of this book is incredibly simple. You simply eat one carb, one protein, and one fat with each meal and snack. That is it! There is no counting of anything (fat, carbs, points, calories) and no hardline restrictions or foods that are off limits. the doctor also gives you a huge selection of possible meal ideas and recipes using normal, every day, easily available foods. But the possibilities for meals are really endless. I disagree with a previous reviewer who said that you have to eat 2 or 3 items with every meal and snack. I disagree. For example, today for lunch I had a tuna sandwich. This fits the 1:1:1 framework. The tuna was the protein, the two slices of bread was the carb, and the mayo was the fat. Everything all in one neat easy package. This is not a diet, it is a lifestyle change. If you want to have chocolate, ice cream, dessert, or a baked good, you can with this plan. You can eat whatever you want without feeling guilty. the author is a nutritionist, so of course, she does encourage you to make healthy choices as much as possible, but she also gives you permission and freedom to indulge is some so-called unhealthy choices from time to time. You are allowed a generous portion of food on this plan. You get 3 meals and two snacks. She breaks it down in a way that is easy to apply and understand. She also gives you suggestions as to what to eat. But she also makes a point of saying that these are simply ideas, they are NOT a set meal plan.

I read this book in one sitting. As soon as I read the last page, I thought to myself "Now, this I can do." I can't wait to give it a try. If you are sick and tired of complicated, restrictive, or fad diets, do yourself a favor and purchase this book. You won't be sorry.

A review from a newbie DSLR user.

I decided I wanted to stop taking pictures and start making better pictures. I purchased an entry level Nikon D3300. I have no DSLR experience. The owner's manual is dry equipment instruction. This book illustrates the camera functions and puts those functions into cause and effect context. The color illustrations and tips are beginner friendly.

The author suggests completing the end of chapter exercises. The end of chapter exercises gave me bad flashbacks of educational textbooks. I read through the book and did not perform the end of chapter exercises. It was a big mistake. Each end of chapter exercise reinforces skill sets in incremental progression. I read through the book again. This time I completed the end of chapter exercises.

Fantastic introduction

This is a great book for a beginner. We bough a Nikon D3300 as an intro DSLR because we wanted to get into photography. This book is great at getting you confident in shooting in manual mode fairly quickly. I like that it "dives right in" to the professional modes and largely skips over the automatic modes. That is important to actually learn how things work. I also appreciate the flow of the book--it starts out explaining what different camera settings are, and then it moves into chapters on how to shoot good portraits, landscapes, etc.

The author is straightforward and easy to read. A good balance of informality so all the technical terms do not get overwhelming.

This is a book more for beginners. If you are a beginner and want to get confident in using your DSLR, I recommend this!

I wanted a guide that would introduce me to the basic concepts of photography while teaching me how to use my new camera - this book does exactly that! I recommend this to anyone who wants to learn how to use their camera, and even to those who may already know the basics, you'll pick up some helpful hints and tricks along the way!

Conflating Economic Privilege and White Privilege Does Not Help Address the Real Problem of White Privilege

Yes, "white privilege" is a real thing. Yes, Black Lives Matter. Yes, we all need to do much more to understand why life is very different for white and black (and brown and Latino and Asian and...) in America.

Still, this book is such an unrealistic portrayal of life for most white people in the US that it is likely to exacerbate tensions rather than help resolve them.

As other reviewers have pointed out, Ms. Irving has conflated much of her economic privilege into her white privilege. She readily admits to a very upper class (let's not even try for "upper middle class") background but then seems to think that this kind of upbringing has given her the same experiences as the "rest of us," who have often had to deal with limited choices because of the less than affluent communities and schools we inhabit.

Further, it is almost beyond belief that a person given the privileges she has had could be quite so uninformed about the real world. Are all white people as blind to reality as she seemed to be before "waking up white?" I find that difficult to believe. Here, for example, is one of her early experiences in the real world of work.

Irving completed four years of college at "very white" Kenyon college and then spent an extended time on a study abroad program in "also very white" Vienna. She then returned and used her father's extensive connections to get an internship at WGBH, Boston's premier public radio station.

On her very first day at the station, this new intern with no job experience is approached by another staff person and is offered a position as managing director of a local dance company! Though she admits that she may not be well qualified, she still takes the job.

As Irving tells it, one of her first grants at the dance company provides funding to bring 500 "inner city children" to the Boston Shakespeare Theater to watch a daytime dance program. She expects that this experience will be a wonderfully welcome opportunity for the kids. Imagine her surprise then when the lines of school buses begin bringing the students to the theater.

"When the kids started pouring off the buses, I couldn't believe how many were black...I had never seen so manyh black faces in one place in my life. I felt complete shock that 'inner-city' seemed to equate with 'black!'" (page 108)

Really? One can spend more than 20 years in the US, at apparently good schools, can listen to a public radio station with all kinds of diverse programming, and still be "shocked" that inner-city and black are synonymous in her city?

It is this kind of removal from everyday life that makes Waking Up White a very unhelpful book. It can only reinforce stereotypes some of other races may have about all whites, and it is so totally not real world that most whites with far less economic coddling are likely to just blow it off as so much "liberal pandering." There are far better works out there that address what is a real problem without making things worse.

"Invisible" White Culture inhibits Inclusiveness: Please read this book, my fellow white people.

I thought I was further along in my journey of understanding racism after 15 years of work. This book opened my eyes to many more of my own behaviors that can be problematic for people of color. Debby Irving's descriptions of "not wanting to look stupid" or "not wanting to offend", so just avoiding or keeping quiet when uncomfortable was SO familiar. The thought that schools were a place of fear for many African American parents, such that they didn't feel comfortable advocating for their children was mind-blowing and disheartening, but upon reflection, totally reasonable. And the reality that black anger can easily be dismissed by white administrators who avoid conflict reduces their likelihood of success. How many times would I try before I gave up, given the same obstacles???

I appreciated the list of dominant white male culture behaviors, and the discussion of how they can be both good and bad, depending on the situation. For those who have read this far, the list follows:
Conflict avoidance, Valuing formal education over life experience, Right to comfort/entitlement, Sense of urgency, Competitiveness, Emotional restraint, Judgementalness, Either/ Or thinking, Belief in one Right way, Defensiveness, Being status oriented.

Personally, I would add one more, Seeing ourselves as Individuals more than members of a group. (the white group)
This book made me think deeply about how these behaviors inhibit attempts to be more inclusive of folks who have different views, and how I can behave differently.

If we white people continue to avoid honest discussions across the racial divide our forefathers erected, we will never benefit from the amazing gifts other cultures can offer, and we will stay in a fearful state. And violence will continue on both sides of the divide, with people of color getting blamed for justifiable anger and white people remaining self-justified in squelching any conflict or honest dialogue about other's painful reality.
Thank you Debby Irving, for teaching me how to be a better ally, and reminding me that it will take more work on my part to make a positive difference. This is work I am willing to do, because the deeper connections and my expanded views are so worth it!

And for those who are disparaging this book as "liberal guilt" and such, I believe they are just so deep in denial and fear that they are committed to remain ignorant.

White and Awakened

Every White person in the USA should be required to read this book. I am a white, male, sixty plus year old who was born and raised in North Carolina. As I lived in Massachusetts, and California I became acutely aware of how little white people understand what it is like to be a person of color in our country. In the southeastern US I was exposed to people who were in the Ku Klux Klan. People who bragged about lynching people of color and brutal behaviors of all kinds. This book details not only the consequences of openly malicious behavior, but also the subtleties that people of color have to endure. This book will raise your level of sensitivity to all races. It will make you a better person. I know, because of the affect it had on my life and my relationships with people of color. Many thanks to Debby Irving for sharing her journey toward the perfection of me.

Editing sentences about strippers??!!

I bought this to possibly use for a high school writing class for homeschoolers. In the first section, it asks students to correct this sentence: "We invited the strippers Katy Perry and Jay-Z." How is this type of material appropriate, and what was Princeton Review thinking when they published it?? Needless to say, it's on it's way back to Amazon for a refund.

I'm only halfway through this and have already found numerous errors. I question some of their rules and designations; they don't fit with what I have previously been taught, leaving me more confused than educated. I tried contacting the Princeton Review about the errors because I'm suspicious of these kinds of errors in a grammar book.

Shockingly incorrect and misleading

An ESL student of mine has been working on this book independently and came to me with a whole host of questions, all of which result from mistakes, confusing explanations and incorrect rules that the book states. It is shocking. I have recommended that he throws it in the garbage where it belongs, and so should you.
